  1. Abiotic factors: Water Sunlight Oxygen Temperature Soil Biotic factors: Any living organism or group of organisms in the environment Ex: grass, trees, bacteria, mammals, insects…etc Ecology:The study of how living things interact with each other & their environment. Ecosystem: The community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with their nonliving surroundings.

  2. NEEDS • All living organisms need: • Water • H20 2. Space • A place & space to live 3. Homeostasis • Stable internal conditions. 4. Food • A source of energy.

  3. Food Chains & Food Webs - Energy flow.

  4. I. Autotrophic organisms are primary producers. A. All food chains begin with a producer. 1) Producer10 consumer20consumer etc… B. They convert energy into a form that can be used by other organisms. 2) Thus supporting the food chain/web. C. Example: 1) grassgrasshoppersnakehawk.

  5. Photoautotrophs, or phototrophs make their food by using the energy from light in a process named photosynthesis. EX: all plants, algae & some bacteria. Chemoautotrophs, or chemotrophs make their food from environmental chemicals: Inorganic Organic EX: methanogens, halophiles. Autotrophs“self feeders”

  6. Water + Carbon dioxide Sugar + Oxygenor6H20 + 6CO2 C6H12O6 + 6O2

  7. Energy Lost: Only a small amount of “net” energy transfers from one trophic level to the next.A. Roughly 10% transfers.B. But, why?

  8. Vocabulary Review • Herbivore = plant eater. • Carnivore = meat eater. • Omnivore = eats plants and/or meat. • Producer = autotrophic organism. • Consumer = heterotrophic organism. • Decomposer = eats dead or decaying matter. • Food chain = series of events where one organism eats another to obtain energy. • Food Web = overlapping food chains in an ecosystem. • An arrow ()= “is eaten by;” or “energy transfer.”

  9. FOOD FOR THOUGHT • How does food store energy? • What is energy? • Why do all living organisms need it? • How do biological organisms use their energy? • Can you quantify energy?
