Independent Senior Living Options and How to Tell What Is Right for You

Self-Reliance and happiness begins when we realize how false and destructive this dream is; when we understand that no one can take care of us better and that only we are responsible for our lives; and when we start to learn effective methods for doing these things ourselves.

  1. Co-Ed Residential Treatment Facilities If you have a troubled teen and feel he or she needs some serious therapy and support, a co-ed residential facility may be ideal. There are facilities which operate for only boys or for only girls, but a co- ed venue offers certain advantages. The co-ed facility has all the usual programs you'd find elsewhere. Activities such as academic studies, therapy and counseling and social events are the mainstay of the program. The difference being that socially, the residents in a co-ed facility get to mix with their peers from both genders and this can help in so many ways. Because the facility is set up to become a community, something akin to a large family unit, social interaction is important, residential treatment centers and treated in a low-key but effective manner. In group therapy sessions, teens get to hear how others have struggled. For each teen to see that both girls and boys can suffer from things like low self esteem, depression and difficulties with drugs, alcohol and clashes with authorities is reassuring. The teen sees that he or she is not alone, their problems are not unique. And because the goal of the center is not only to help each resident overcome their problem but to learn how to make plans, to set goals and be successful once they leave, mixing socially with a group of males and females makes the success they achieve even greater.

  2. In fact a troubled teen who can develop social skills during their stay in the facility is gaining a powerful bonus. Improving their academic skills and overcoming their troubles are the two main goals of every center. But if the teens can gain confidence, programs for troubled teens and social skills with the opposite sex, they are returning home a real winner. If the teen has trouble at school with their studies, the small class sizes in the facility mean they can get the attention they need to improve their learning. There is even the opportunity to have personal tuition after hours to further improve their skills. It's only because the teens are in residence that this can work so well. Then the therapy sessions too are both one on one and in small groups. Because the staff therapists are experienced in particular areas of teen problems, each resident gets specific help. This is where the real benefit of being in residence is seen. It's not just a matter of overcoming the particular problem or problems faced by each teen but the way they are given the tools to take control of their own destiny. They learn how to avoid problems, how to plan their future, residential treatment centers for depression and to develop strategies which will enable them to reach their goals. When they are doing all these things in a co-ed situation, they are growing in so many positive and worthwhile ways. As a parent you should be aware that time goes by quickly and getting your troubled teen into a residential treatment facility can make a huge difference to the health and happiness of your child. You can give them no better preparation for the future.
