  3. What are STDs? • Communicable Diseases • Pathogens of STDs are passed from one to another during sexual intercourse • Pathogens need a warm, moist place to grow and multiply • Most STDs are passed during sexual intercourse

  4. What causes STDs? • Pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites

  8. HIV • Human Immunodeficiency Virus • Flu like symptoms • Weakened immune system • Invades white blood cells called T-cells • If not treated, may progress to AIDS in just 10 years • Transmitted by body fluids: blood, semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk

  9. Behaviors that transmit HIV • Sexual intercourse • Sharing needles • Being born to an HIV+ mother • Receiving HIV+ blood transfusion • Ingesting breast milk from an HIV+ mother

  10. AIDS • Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome • Weakened immune system • Very low T-cell count • IT’S PREVENTABLE!!!!

  11. Ways to prevent HIV and other STDs • Abstinence!!! (Abstain from sexual intercourse) • Abstain from sharing needles • Lifelong monogamy with an uninfected partner

  12. Ways you CAN’T get HIV and other STDs • Holding hands • Kissing • Hugging • Sharing food/ drinks • Coughing/ sneezing • Swimming pools • Door knobs • Mosquitoes • Toilet seats
