  3. Stand up for equality strategy Why have an equality strategy for the service? At CANS we believe that our common humanity makes us equal in worth, dignity and rights. We value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination …… ……. but how do we do this? >

  4. Strategic Priorities Current ones:- • British Sign Language • Hate Crime Reporting • Gypsies and Travellers • Gender Violence and Abuse • Discrimination Advice >

  5. New priorities this year • people with mental health problems • migrant communities and community cohesion • empowering clients to have more voice and influence (Secret weapon - Holly & Our North Somerset café) >

  6. What do I do? • Work with partners across North Somerset to change outcomes externally • Work within our organisation to raise awareness and challenge attitudes and … • Starting to work with R&C on joint campaigns >

British Sign Language • Deaf Awareness session at staff meeting • Deaf people, BSL interpreter and notetaker at AGM • Communication Café • Participate in Deaf Awareness Week • Help Deaf people get advice • (Secret weapon – Richard) • Signed the UK Council on Deafness “Statement of Common Purpose” • Also hard of hearing – induction loops etc >
