  1. Chapter 25 Electromagnetic Induction

  2. Hans Christian Oersted • Discovered that an electric current produces a magnetic field

  3. Electricity produced from magnetic field • Michael Faraday discovered that current can be generated through a magnetic field.

  4. Electromagnetic Induction • The process of generating a current through a wire by passing it through a magnetic field

  5. Right-Hand Rule • B = fingers • F = up from palm • v = thumb-motion

  6. Electromotive Force • Potential difference, or voltage, between two substances needed to produce a current

  7. Electromotive Force • Produced when a length of wire is passed through a magnetic field in a direction  to the field

  8. Electromotive Force • If the direction of the wire is not  to the field, its  component must be determined to determine the EMF

  9. Electromotive Force • EMF = BLv • B = magnetic field • L = lengthwire in field • v = velocitywire in field

  10. Application of EMF • Microphones and loudspeakers follow the application of induced EMF.

  11. A straight wire, 0.20 m long, moves at a constant speed of 7.0 m/s perpendicular to magnetic field of strength 8.0 x 102 T. The resistance is .5 Ω Calculate EMF and current.

  12. A straight wire, 0.75 cm long, moves at a constant speed of 14.0 m/s perpendicular to magnetic field of strength 6.0 x 103 mT. The resistance is 5000µΩ Calculate EMF and current.

  13. A single-engine airplane travels at 400 km/h passes over a region where Earth’s magnetic field is 4.5 x 10-5 T and is nearly vertical. Calculate the EMF induced by the wings that are 4000 cm apart.
