  1. THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCEDBY THE EUROPEAN UNION Promoting Sustainable Urban Mobility with CIVITAS

  2. Workshop Goals The workshop provided you with: • theoretical background on social inclusion; • the opportunity to exchange knowledge with experienced urban transport professionals; • inspiring case studies from across Europe that show; • innovative approaches in the field of social inclusion.

  3. The last case: the transgender community • Conclusions from the legal context exercise • General conclusions • What has VANGUARD have to offer over the next 6 months?

  4. More needs to be done to understand the mobility needs of marginalised groups...

  5. User perspective • Public space and public transport is for many trans persons a dreadful experience • Safety, security and dignity are affected by staff and fellow passengers

  6. Legal background • Passenger rights regulations • EU gender equality directives • European convention on human rights • ETUC activities

  7. Experienced problems: what can our sector address? • Combined exclusion: income, unemployment • Negative experiences: transphobic remarks, abuse • ID issues, unsympathetic staff • Different tarrif schemes for men and women • Car as a safe environment

  8. Solutions • No gender identification when purchasing tickets • No gender differences in ticket schemes • Cycling as a mode that gives freedom and safety • Research: UK study by PT executives • Safety and security measures that are good for all. • Staff awareness and training • Constructive dialogue

  9. What did we discuss?

  10. Not more than 2 prams per Tram due to safety Requirements Even after Refurbishment Solution: solve Safety issue By fixing prams Strong local policies to protect cultural and historical character of cities block accessibility measures. Better awarenss about solutions and dialogue can solve the problem. Schoolbuses can’t take other passengers, often the only transport, again: due to safety concerns Can national regulations be made more flexible? CCTV cannot be used in court as legal prove for crime nor traffic offenses The law should change, and police should be more present on PT PT legislation not adapted for integrated services. A new national law should regulated specifically inclusive transport services. Public service obligations not well defined, or underbudgetted. Passenger rights will help to move forward Traffic law does not favour active modes such as walking or cycling, vulnerable road users need to be taken more into consideration.

  11. Do not forget... • EU: • take into account entry into force of passenger rights regulation • For some EU funding, specific guidelines apply • Integration of policies: Who picks up the bill?

  12. CIVITAS VANGUARDWhat is our offer for the next period? • One training event, • webinars, • result exploitation workshops (TRA, Athens, April 24!) • thematic e-mail groups and study tours • Political Advisory Committee meeting before summer • Annual CIVITAS Forum Conference • VITORIA GASTEIZ, 24-26 September • CIVITAS website and newsletters
