  1. Opening Activity-A • September 28, 1066: William the Conqueror invaded England. He took the throne and became king of England. If you were king for a day, what would you do?

  4. What is Culture? • Culture: the way of life of a group of people with common traditions, interests, and beliefs. • Elements of culture may include, language, religion, education, government, economics, literature, art, music, architecture, history, etc.

  5. Cultural Trait: activities and behaviors that people often take part in. • For example, how do we eat? • How to people in China eat? • How would you describe the Amish way of life?

  6. From the beginning of time, people have found different ways of expressing themselves. • Because the experiences of people are different, cultures are also different.

  11. What is Civilization? • Civilization: a culture that has organized a social, economic, and political system, built cities, and achieved a certain level of development in arts and sciences.

  12. Before the rise of civilizations, people were concerned with meeting basic needs and left few written records. • What are these basic needs? • Do you have the problem of trying to meet these needs today?

  13. What is history? • History: the study of written information about events and people in the past.

  14. Who was the first President of the United States? George Washington

  15. How did WWII end? When the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

  16. What happened before writing? • In the course of humanity’s existence, there was a time before written language. • Believe it or not, it wasn’t until the mid 20th century that most people in the U.S. could read and write. • Prehistory: time before written records were kept.

  17. What happened before writing? • Just because there was no writing, it doesn’t mean we don’t know about people way back then. • So, how do we collect information without writing? • We examine evidence left behind such as bones, ruins, weapons, tools, pottery, and other artifacts.

  19. Cultural Hearth: place where civilization is said to have begun. • So, why does civilization develop in these areas first and not in other places? • Well, they all share similar characteristics actually.

  20. Each place was characterized by a mild climate and fertile lands. • Each place was near a major river. • Egypt-Nile, Iraq-Tigris and Euphrates, Pakistan-Ganges, China-Yellow • Why is this important?

  21. Because early man were farmers.

  22. Population Change • Population change is based upon 3 main factors. • Birthrate:how many people are born each year (per 1000 people). • Death rate:how many people die each year (per 1000 people).

  23. Population Change • Migration Rate:the number of people that move from one place to another. • Emigrants:people who leave a country to live somewhere else. • Immigrants:people who come to a new country to live.

  24. Population Change • Refugees:people who are forced to leave their homes and cannot return.

  25. Why Leave? • Push Factors:those things that cause people to leave, or be pushed away from a place. • Pull Factors:those things that cause people to come, or be pulled into a place.
