  1. Murder at Porto Beach Office 11 Alisha Ramirez, Kate Vincent, Megan Balcombe, Gill Gilmour, Daniel Nixon, Shekima Fields, Mobeen Ghani, Erik Johnson, Sarah Major, Toby Ridings, Laura Woods, and Daniel Colbeck

  2. Investigation Week 1 • Members of Office 11 introduced themselves, giving background info and interests to form a bond with other members • Once the team had gotten to know each other case studies were collected from around Manchester, Glasgow, and Florida • Case studies documented famous and recent cases in these areas including... • serial murders • gang-related crimes • domestic violence • Jobs were assigned and 6victims were discovered • Our elected Senior Investigating Officer was Alisha Ramirez

  3. Key Findings • We were introduced to having to complete tasks within a given time. We learned how to effectively work together in an online group. We each had to pick a role which would best match our skills. • Key skills we developed • Team building • The ability to gather information on cases • The ability to write concisely and to analyse and critique • The Murder Victims had similar characteristics, shown in the following chart…

  4. Investigation Week 2The Investigation Team Senior Investigating Officer • Alisha Ramirez Information Department • Kate Vincent, Megan Balcombe, Shekima Fields, and Toby Ridings Evidence Department • Evidence Disclosure Officers - Gill Gilmour and Daniel Colbeck • Statistical Analysts - Daniel Nixon and Mobeen Ghani • Geo. Info. Analysts - Sarah Major, Erik Johnson, and Laura Woods

  5. Statistical Findings • Porto beach (3.82) has a higher crime rate than England (1.37) and Scotland (1.9), but a lower one than Florida (6.4). We have noted that Florida has a bigger population. • Minor fluctuations between the murder rates throughout the time period between a range of 2-12 murders, Porto Beach has a relatively stable murder rate. • The majority of murders took place in open spaces and underground car parks, totalling to 21 out of 64 murders being committed annually. The team responded to the budget cuts put in place by doing the following… • Declaring Porto Beach a High Crime area and demanding additional funds • These funds went towards more CCTV, police patrols, and to make the public feel safer • Anincreased amount of police officers on foot patrol rather than in the station to increase public confidence

  6. Investigation Week 3Community Links England's Community Groups: • Drug Action Teams • Manchester CDRP - Gun crime and gang violence Scotland's Community Groups: • Glasgow Drug Crisis Center • CIRV (Community initiative to reduce violence) America’s Community Groups: • Florida Alcohol & Drug Abuse Association • Florida Gang Reduction Strategy

  7. Key Findings • Learned the power of Vigilantism and how it can be controlled • Different Drug & Gang strategies: • England’s groups… have helped by offering support to drug users and their families, mediated between gang members, engaged the public in gun crime 'Mothers Against Violence' in the locality and released media as a method of crime prevention • Scotland's groups… generally encompass a multi -agency response, the drug initiatives aim to prevent and treat drug use whilst the gang strategies aim to educate youngsters on the detrimental effects of gang culture. Prevention is then, the predominant message from Glasgow initiatives and it appears to be successful.  • America’s groups... have advanced addiction treatment, prevention, and research to fight drug problems in Florida. Gang strategies have also advanced prevention, intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry programs for gangs and gang members all over the state.

  8. Investigation Week 4Press Release Created a press release with the aim to reassure public and provide information and data on the situation at Porto Beach. Office 11 discussed the following: • Increase in community safety through CCTV and higher police presence • Introduction of Community Safety Partnerships • Prevention of re-offending through support, community action, and outreach programs • More communication between public and police • Use of statistics to tackle public unease and discourage vigilantism

  9. Key Findings • Situational crime prevention methods to be used: CCTV, street lighting, increased foot patrol • Increasing public confidence to quell moral panics through neighbourhood policing • Offering the public statistical evidence for their reassurance of the murder situation • CDRP initiated to support the work of the police, offer support to the public, and increase the chances of the murderer being apprehended

Challenges Faced:• Working within an environment where not everyone is available at the same time.• Committing to the deadlines. Transferable Skills:I think the biggest skills I have developed while using Porto Beach would be time management and having to commit a few hours a day to check emails and comments made on the wiki site. I would also say I have developed better communication skills through having to work with people from a far.

  14. Laura WoodsGeographic Information Analyst Contributions: • I have had an input in every task, working effectively both in a team and individually. • I have made sure that all my contributions meet the set deadlines  • As one of the GIA's I co-ordinated a discssion on where the murders took place by using the pictures in the gallery as our murder sites • I also had an active part in creating the victim profile Challenges Faced: • Working in an online group where it is difficult to ensure that everyone contributes and understands the given tasks • my inability to work computers! Transferable Skills: • Better computer skills!  • Working in a team consisting of members out with my locality • Working towards deadlines • Working within a role where set tasks are expected of me.

  15. Gill GilmourEvidence Disclosure Officer Contributions: • I have actively contributed in every discussion, and encouraged others to do so. • I made a great effort to keep the group on schedule with the tasks and suggested creative ways that we could make our office stand out from the others. • I searched for statistical data and helped with interpreting the results and had a lot of input with the victim profiling. • I believe I have fulfilled my role as EDO because I regularly updated the Wiki and tried to make it as aesthetically pleasing as I could (e.g. I put clocks that showed the time difference between the US and UK on the front page). Challenges Faced: • when my internet broke. It was difficult to post anything online however by receiving the updates through my phone I was still able to keep up with what everyone else was doing and then comment when I could. Transferable Skills: • I have developed my group work skills, and have enjoyed working with students outside of my own university.

  16. Daniel NixonStatistical Analyst Contributions:• Organised the group discussions and analysed the issues that needed to be considered. • Developed a case study. The case study was elaborated on, critiqued and referred to in the following weeks. • Extensively analysed statistical data from Porto Beach. • Researched organisations that support the police in attempt to reduce crime in my locality. Enabling the construction of a press release.• Communicated and worked effectively with colleagues.• Offered leadership, attempted to involve the group in all tasks discussions and analysis.  Challenges faced:• Working within a given time frame. • Awaiting the response of my colleagues in discussion and tasks Transferable skills:The skills that I have achieved are remarkable. Communicating with colleagues across universities has benefited my time management skills. The ability to research and concisely interpret the relevant topics and issues from the research. Lastly the ability to operate within a police office with source

  17. Toby RidingsPublic Information Officer  Contributions: • Developed my own case study on a murder committed within my locality of Manchester (Giuseppe Gregory murder). • Gathered and statistically analysed data on gun/gang –related murder within the Manchester region. • Researched initiatives undertaken within Manchester in order to tackle gang-related crime. Challenges Faced: • Working in a group where no face to face contact is made between members. • Attempting to contribute work that benefits the group within a timeframe. Transferable Skills: • I feel that working on Porto Beach has encouraged me to improve my time management skills. It has definitely improved my ability to research more concisely and as well as such has increased my confidence in my computer skills.
