  2. Theme • Sometimes called the Central Idea or Main Idea of a story. • The theme is the insight into real life or moral lesson the author wants the reader to learn. • Theme is one of the key aspects of a story. • It is why writers write.

  3. Theme • Themes can be stated in one of two ways: • They can be written as a question- • EXAMPLE: How far are you willing to go to protect your family? • Or they can be written as a statement: • EXAMPLE1: Haste makes waste. • EXAMPLE2: Being greedy leads to loneliness.

  4. Theme • A theme is a generalization about life. • People from all over the world have many of the same experiences. • Every country has tragedy, triumph, humor, romance, and mystery. • People can relate to these ideas regardless of race, religion, or nationality.

  5. Universal Themes in Lit. • Universal Themes deal with basic human concerns such as: • Good vs. Evil • Life vs. Death • Love vs. Hate • Success vs. Failure • Salvation vs. Condemnation

  6. Genres • Genres are different types of literature: • EXAMPLES: Novels, Short Stories, Poems, Plays, Biographies, etc.

  7. Subject • The subject of a story is the topic the story deals with. • This is not the same as theme. • Subject is bigger than theme. • A subject can be stated in one word. • Examples: • Love • Loyalty • Fear • Loss

  8. Formula Fiction • Fiction that is written to please a large audience. • Usually has light-hearted subjects such as romance, love, comedy, etc. • Themes tend to be simple and not very complex or dramatic.
