  2. Profile of the NW Province • North West is the fifth largest province, occupying 9, 5% total land area of South Africa. It is situated centrally and to the North of South Africa. • The total population is 3,6 million. • A large percentage of the population falls under the age of 15.

Profile of the NW Province • The Province is demarcated into the four district councils of Bojanala, Bophirima, Central and Southern and District councils. • There is also 1 cross border district council and 3 cross border municipalities. • 32% of the provincial population is found in the mining areas of Bojanala.

  6. Background on HPS • The HPS concept is closely tied with the understanding of health promotion in general. • The provincial health promotion unit has just been recently re-aligned (2004).

  8. Criteria Tool Used • The WHO guidelines are used as a tool for implementation. • The schools implement HPS projects on a priority need basis.

  11. Challenges • No national implementation standards • Minimal buy-in/support from some district management teams. • Limited provision of resources

  12. OPPORTUNITIES • Availability of the resource package for HPS implementation. • Optimal utilization institutions of higher learning • Widen scope of stakeholders.

Future Plans for HPS • Engage NDoH for technical support. • Reorientation of the HPS to middle and operational level managers. • Strengthen and formalise relationships with departments within the social cluster. • Widen scope of stakeholders. • Develop a provincial health promoting school policy.
