  1. BETTER-iS: Biofuel Evaluation for Tanzanian Technological Efficiency using Renewables – integrated StrategiesAssessing Crop Production Potential for Biofuel ProductionThe Operational Assessment Tool ScalA-BF

  2. Objective of the tool ScalA-BF ScalA-BF supports decision makers with an interest in promotion of biofuel crop production ScalA-BF assists participatory identification of suitable biofuel crop alternatives for a specific location ScalA-BF assist identification of potential bottlenecks for biofuel crop production in specific locations

  3. The Scala-BF Method ScalA-BF is a participatory tool that requires multi-stakeholder input, therefore ScalA-BF should be used for an evaluation of biofuel crop production potentials by means of multistakeholder workshops

  4. The ScalA-BF Workshop Participants ScalA-BF is to be used during multi-stakeholder workshops with all local private, cooperative, and state stakeholders involved in the biofuel production chain

  5. The ScalA-BF Workshop Objectives Achieve a common understanding of the biofuel crop production value chain and the targeted biofuel crop product Support assessment of match between requirements and local capacity for biofuel production crop production • input requirements and capacities • processing technology requirements and capacities • tradeing channel requirements and capacities • workload requirements and capacities • agricultural production area requirements and capacities

  6. ScalA Evaluation[Step 1-2] Step 1 Agro-ecological conditions assessment Step 2 Biofuel crop production system selection sunflower / jatropha / palm oil / croton megalocarpus / individually defined biofuel crop alternative

  7. ScalA Evaluation[Step 2- 4] Step 3 Biofuel crop production requirements assessment Capital / human resource / infrastructural / institutional and input requirements of specific biofuel crop production system Step 4 Local biofuel crop production capacity assessment

  8. ScalA Evaluation [Step 4]Local Biofuel Crop Production Capacity Assessment ScalA-BF compares local capacities and biofuel crop production system requirements e.g. human capacity and labour availability / input availability / land resources / infrastructure for market access In addition, ScalA-BF tests for presence of key scaling-up and adoption factors e.g. required efforts for integration in existing farming system / economic benefits for producers

  9. The Benefits of ScalA-BF The ScalA-BF analysis identifies major gaps between production system requirements and local production potentials Thereby, local specific potential challenges for biofuel crop production system adoption and implementation can be identified

  10. The Benefits of ScalA-BF ScalA-BF results assist development planners and local producers interested in biofuel crop production • to develop suitable local solutions to local biofuel crop production challenges • to identify required local frame conditions for the successful adoption and implementation of biofuel crop production systems
