  1. ~MAKE A GROUP DECISION~ Scenario: You’re on a cruise when suddenly the ship you’re on hits an iceberg. The ship is beginning to sink. All the lifeboats have left at full capacity except one. There is one small lifeboat left that will only hold six people but there are twelve people left on board. As a team, you will need to discuss the situation and vote to make the final decision about who will leave on the lifeboat. These are the twelve people:

  2. ASSESS • What did the group decide? • 2. How did the group perform in making a decision? • 3. Did any conflicts arise? If so, how did the members of the group deal with conflict? • 4. Why did the group make the decisions it did? Did this involve compromise? If so, how did that occur? • 5. What strategies did you use to be a good team member? How could you have been a better team member?

TYPES OF TEAMS • FORMAL-formed by the organization as part of the organizational structure • SPECIAL PURPOSE-formed to take on a temporary project, such as solving a problem or developing a new process or system. • SELF-DIRECTED-rotate jobs to produce a product or service • VIRTUALTEAMS-use technology to collaborate on projects

MOCK INTERVIEWS • As a cooperative learning team of four to five students, students will develop five interview questions for a career in which the team is interested. • Within the cooperative learning team, students will break into pairs. Each individual should interview a different person and bring the answers back to share with the group. • Students will come back to cooperative learning team and discuss how interviews went.

COLLABORATIVE TEAM WORKSHEET Delivery of team worksheet: Before the end of class, each team should turn in a Collaborative: Team Worksheet that reflects on the team’s experience in the mock interviews. As a team, the students should answer the following questions. Answers should be keyed using Microsoft Word (one team member should act as scribe): • Was it easy to come up with interview questions as a team? Why or why not? How did your team overcome any disagreements in which questions to ask? • In the individual interview experiences, were there any funny moments, or frustrating ones? Please describe. • When you discussed how your answers or your interviewees’ answers were different than what you expected, what did you learn?

  11. PERSONAL ASSESSMENTFree-write for 15-20 minutes on the following questions: • Do you consider yourself to be a team player? Why or why not? • How did you feel about the group activities assigned? Did you enjoy working with other individuals? • How do you handle conflict within a team setting? • What can you do to become a better team player?
