  4. Confirmation

  5. Who Can receive this Sacrament?

  6. CCC 1306 1306 Every baptized person not yet confirmed can and should receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Since Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist form a unity, it follows that "the faithful are obliged to receive this sacrament at the appropriate time," for without Confirmation and Eucharist, Baptism is certainly valid and efficacious, but Christian initiation remains incomplete.

  7. CCC 1307 1307 For centuries, Latin custom has indicated "the age of discretion" as the reference point for receiving Confirmation. But in danger of death children should be confirmed even if they have not yet attained the age of discretion.

  8. Effects of Confirmation

  9. #1 Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

  10. John 14:16 & 25-26 • 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate † to be with you always, • … • 25 “I have told you this while I am with you. • 26 The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told you. • Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. 11. John 16:7 But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. • Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Board of Trustees, Catholic Church. National Conference of Catholic Bishops, & United States Catholic Conference. Administrative Board. (1996, c1986). The New American Bible : Translated from the original languages with critical use of all the ancient sources and the revised New Testament (Jn 16:7). Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.

  12. Acts 1:8 8 … you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” • Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Board of Trustees, Catholic Church. National Conference of Catholic Bishops, & United States Catholic Conference. Administrative Board. (1996, c1986). 13. CCC 1302 1302 It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.

  14. #2 Completes Baptismal Grace

  15. CCC 1316 1316 Confirmation perfects Baptismal grace; it is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds.

  16. The Holy Spirit is received at Baptism and its power is released at Confirmation.

  17. Must not be confused with spiritual renewal or conversion experience

  18. ANOINTING OF THE SICK Given whenever in danger of death

  19. CCC 1514 1514 The Anointing of the Sick "is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived."

  20. CCC 1515 1515 If a sick person who received this anointing recovers his health, he can in the case of another grave illness receive this sacrament again. If during the same illness the person's condition becomes more serious, the sacrament may be repeated. It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced.

  21. Biblical Basis: James 5:14-15

  22. James 5:14-15 • 14 Is anyone among you sick? † He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, • 15 and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. • † Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Board of Trustees, Catholic Church. 23. CCC 1516 1516 Only priests (bishops and presbyters) are ministers of the Anointing of the Sick…

  24. CCC 1532(Effects of Anointing of the Sick) 1532 The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has as its effects: • the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church; • the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age; • the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of Penance; • the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul; • the preparation for passing over to eternal life.

  25. Uniting our Suffering to Christ’s Passion

  26. CCC 1499 1499 "By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ."

  27. CCC 1505 1505 … By his passion and death on the cross Christ has given a new meaning to suffering: it can henceforth configure us to him and unite us with his redemptive Passion.

  28. CCC 1521 1521Union with the passion of Christ. By the grace of this sacrament the sick person receives the strength and the gift of uniting himself more closely to Christ's Passion: in a certain way he is consecrated to bear fruit by configuration to the Savior's redemptive  Passion. Suffering, a consequence of original sin, acquires a new meaning; it becomes a participation in the saving work of Jesus.

  29. Healing

  30. CCC 1508 1508 The Holy Spirit gives to some a special charism of healing so as to make manifest the power of the grace of the risen Lord. But even the most intense prayers do not always obtain the healing of all illnesses. Thus St. Paul must learn from the Lord that "my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness," and that the sufferings to be endured can mean that "in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his Body, that is, the Church."

  31. 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 • 7 because of the abundance of the revelations. Therefore, that I might not become too elated, † a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated. • 8 Three times † I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, • 9 † but he said to me, † “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. • 10 Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong. † • Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. 32. Galatians 4:13-14 • 13 you know that it was because of a physical illness † that I originally preached the gospel to you, • 14 and you did not show disdain or contempt because of the trial caused you by my physical condition, but rather you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. • Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. 34. 1 Timothy 5:23 23 Stop drinking only water, but have a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. • Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. 35. HOLY ORDERS Ministerial priesthood

  36. CCC 1538 1538 … confers a gift of the Holy Spirit that permits the exercise of a "sacred power" (sacra potestas) which can come only from Christ himself through his Church…

  37. This is an apostolic ministry which should not be confused with the common priesthood of men.

  38. CCC 1546 1546 Christ, high priest and unique mediator, has made of the Church "a kingdom, priests for his God and Father." The whole community of believers is, as such, priestly. The faithful exercise their baptismal priesthood through their participation, each according to his own vocation, in Christ's mission as priest, prophet,  and king. Through the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation the faithful are "consecrated to be . . . a holy priesthood."

  39. 1 Peter 2:9-10

  40. CCC 1547 1547 …While the common priesthood of the faithful is exercised by the unfolding of baptismal grace - a life of faith, hope, and charity, a life according to the Spirit - , the ministerial priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood…

  41. CCC 1591 1591 The whole Church is a priestly people. Through Baptism all the faithful share in the priesthood of Christ. This participation is called the "common priesthood of the faithful." Based on this common priesthood and ordered to its service, there exists another participation  in the mission of Christ: the ministry conferred by the sacrament of Holy Orders, where the task is to serve in the name and in the person of Christ the Head in the midst of the community.

  42. CCC 1592 1592 The ministerial priesthood differs in essence from the common priesthood of the faithful because it confers a sacred power for the service of the faithful. The ordained ministers exercise their service for the People of God by teaching (munus docendi), divine worship (munus liturgicum) and pastoral governance (munus regendi).

  43. Ordination imprints an indelible sacramental character

  44. CCC 1583 1583 It is true that someone validly ordained can, for grave reasons, be discharged from the obligations and functions linked to ordination, or can be forbidden to exercise them; but he cannot become a layman again in the strict sense, because the character imprinted by ordination is for ever. The vocation and mission received on the day of his ordination mark him permanently.
