  1. Routine Calibration Activities • The routine phase will start at the end of the commissioning phase. • The routine calibration is composed mainly of: • Spectral calibration • Radiometric calibration • Vicarious calibration

  2. Systematic Calibration Activities • Radiometric calibration • White Diffuser 1. Every 15 days • White Diffuser 2. Every 3 months. Spectral calibration • Spectrometric calibration • Pink spectralon diffuser Every 3 months. • Vicarious calibration • Aos: Systematic data extraction and distribution (Metric)

  3. Calibration Campaigns • Radiometric characterization • Observation of White Diffuser 1: Every 3 months • Spectrometric characterization • Fraunhofer analysis. Once per year. • Oxygen analysis. Once per year. • Vicarious calibration • Aos: Campaign data extraction and distribution

  4. IECF Instrument Engineering Calibration Facility

  5. IECF Operational Concept • Execution of Calibration Algorithms (Algorithm Processor) • Generation of Reports (Report Builder) • (Visualization of data) • Handling of ADF files and CTI tables (ADF/CTI Builder) • (Generation, Validation, Dissemination)

  6. Main IECF Calibration Functions • F1: Blank Pixels and Coarse Offsets • F2: Generation and Comparison of Radiometric Gain and Radiometric Offsets Values • F4: Generation of the Spectrometric Values • F5: Blank Pixels, VEU Temperature and CCD Temp • F6: Radiometric Calibration Report • F16: Generate MER_RAC_AX using ADF_Builder

  7. Blank Pixels Signal CCD and VEU Temperature Main IECF Reports

  8. User defined execution (e.g.: Algo Processor, Report Builder and ADF Builder) User defined input data User defined configuration parameters Processing Chain • Batch Execution • Association of the execution to a specific event • Event types: • product is arrived into IECF db • timer event (time, absolute orbit, relative orbit)

  9. METRIC • Data extraction over selected sites following specific radiometric and geographic criteria for the absolute calibration of MERIS by vicarious methods. • MER_RR__1P product order on the basis of site definition: • Rayleigh, Glitter, Desert, • Output files in HDF format • FTP server to end user • CNES, RAL

  10. METRIC SITES

  11. METRIC Potential Improvements • Extend the Level 1b surface types to be processed: • Snow/Ice, Buoys (Moby, Ishigaki,Boussole) • (Extraction algorithm needed) • Extend to the level 2 products: • i.e. IOCCG Diagnostic data sites • (Extraction algorithm needed) • Extend the number of instruments to be processed: • Include AATSR

  12. Calibration Methodology • BRDF model • Update of the BRDF model based on in-flight data • (Calibrations Dif 1&2, Observation Dif 1) • Inputs from Vicarious calibration activities • Routine operations • Automatic monitoring of instrument gain • Update of gain coefficients triggered according • to threshold detection (goal < 0.5%) • ADF update using latest Calibration data • Reprocessing Approach • TBD

  13. Status of Routine Operation • IECF transfert to ESRIN being prepared with a target date Mid-November 2002 • Cal / Val plan for the Exploitation phase in progress • Support Contract with ESL for will start in January 2003 • A Quality Working Group will be start in January 2003 • Set of tools for the product quality control have been delivered: • Quarc (automatic QC, mission analysis), • MerisView (Interacative QC), A • Malfi (products final check before delivery)

  14. Routine Calibration Activities: Conclusion • Level 1b is ready to be transfered to operations • Routine CalibrationContinuity of Aos for the vicarious calibration (Metric) • Systematic calibration activity • IECF being transfered in operation (Mid-November) • Cal / Val plan, • Support contract will begin in January 2003 • Quality Working Group will begin in January 2003 • The tools for insuring the product quality are available.
