  1. On your desk: PRIDE Card Pencil/Pen I.N. 1. Describe the weather in these 3 pictures. **Use complete sentences and at least 3 descriptive words for each!! 1 2 3 Bell Work 2/27/14

  2. Meteorology

  3. Update your Table of Contents

  4. Why is predicting weather important? It answers questions like: “What should I wear today?” Meteorology- the study of the atmosphere which is used to predict weather conditions. Create a double bubble with at least 10 reasons why it is important to predict weather!

  5. Is there a difference??? • Climate- long-term average of weather patterns in a particular area. • Weather- short-term variations in atmospheric conditions. YES!!! Examples in Arizona…. Weather vs. Climate

  6. Do you want to be able to predict the weather?? Have you ever wondered how weather is predicted?? http://www.weather.com/video/phoenixs-60-second-forecast-710

  7. Solar radiation from the __________ heats the Earth’s surface. Through _________________, the air touching the Earth’s surface is heated. Hot air is _________ dense and rises. This movement of air causes ________________ currents to form in the atmosphere. The movement and collisions of these air masses causes weather!!! Let’s review the Atmosphere…

  8. Air Mass- A large volume of air that has the same characteristics, like humidity, or temperature, as the area it was formed. • Air masses are always on the move!! …. THINK Convection Currents! Air Masses

  9. Let’s do a little investigating in order to determine how air moves… • Use your text book to define and label the following terms on the globe provided. • Polar Easterlies • Westerlies • Trade winds • Doldrums • Horse Latitudes Weather and Climate Chapter 1 Section 3 Pages 14-19 Movement of air masses

  10. Label the Diagram! Key: Polar Easterlies (blue) Westerlies (green) Trade winds (yellow) Doldrums (orange) Horse Latitudes (red)

  11. The Coriolis Effect! Why did you draw curved lines??????

  12. The curving of the path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to the Earth’s rotation. • Winds and Ocean currents Demo The Coriolis Effect

  13. If you flush a toilet in Argentina, will it rotate the same was as it does here?? You are HERE Thought question…..(add to the L side of your IN)

  14. Bell Work 2/28/14

  15. If you flush a toilet in Argentina, will it rotate the same was as it does here?? Affects weather not toilets!! You are HERE Thought question….. http://www.cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?v=rdGtcZSFRLk

  16. The curving of the path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to the Earth’s rotation. • Winds and Ocean currents Demo The Coriolis Effect

  17. Describe the…. • Polar Easterlies • Westerlies • Trade winds • Doldrums • Horse Latitudes Review: Movement of air masses

  18. Weather!!! What happens when air masses collide???

  19. Cold Air Masses in North America come from the North. • Warm Air Masses in North America come from the South. The two air masses meet in the middle and MIX to create a front. Air Masses and Fronts

  20. Cold Front • Warm Front • Occluded Front • Stationary Front Fronts

  21. Reading a Weather Map
