  1. IEEE 802.1 Liaison Report to T11 T11/10-187, April 1st, 2010 Claudio DeSanti

  2. IEEE 802.1 Activities Relevant to T11 • Data Center Bridging • 802.1Qau - Congestion Notification (CN) • Specifies protocols, procedures and managed objects that support congestion management of long-lived data flows within network domains of limited bandwidth delay product • 802.1Qaz - Enhanced Transmission Selection (ETS) and Data Center Bridging eXchange protocol (DCBX) • Specifies enhancement of transmission selection to support allocation of bandwidth amongst traffic classes • 802.1Qbb Priority-based Flow Control (PFC) • Specifies protocols, procedures and managed objects that enable flow control per traffic class and augments Congestion Notification in Data Center Bridging networks • 802.3bd MAC Control Frame for Priority-based Flow Control • Specifies the MAC Control frame format for Priority-based Flow Control • Activities defining the Lossless Ethernet required by FCoE

  3. Data Center Bridging • Met in Orlando, FL, on March 15 to 19 • 802.1Qau – Congestion Notification (CN) • Hit congestion in Executive Committee • Heads scratched in an effort to digest the situation… ☻ • 802.1Qaz – ETS/DCBX • Transmission Selection stopped transmitting! • Flow-controlled by an unexpected PFC frame while fighting with Audio and Video streams • 802.1Qbb – Priority-based Flow Control (PFC) • Very effective in flow-controlling any progress • Desperation spreading after hitting record high ballots per word! • 802.3bd – MAC Control Frame for PFC • Using Senate reconciliation process to bypass plenary vote • Apparently more onerous than expected for a frame

  4. Data Center Bridging (the facts) • Met in Orlando, FL, on March 15 to 19 • 802.1Qau – Congestion Notification (CN) • Done! • Officially approved by IEEE-SA for final publication on March 25 • 802.1Qaz – ETS/DCBX • Completed comments resolution on draft 1.2 • Draft 1.3 going to Recirculation Ballot soon • Expected to go in Sponsor Ballot after the May interim • 802.1Qbb – Priority-based Flow Control (PFC) • Draft 2.1 in Recirculation Ballot • Going to Sponsor Ballot immediately thereafter • 802.3bd – MAC Control Frame for PFC • Draft 1.0 going to Sponsor Ballot with 802.1Qbb

  5. Additional Information • Next IEEE 802.1 meeting: • Interim meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 24 to 27 • Plenary meeting in San Diego, CA, on July 11 to 16 • For more details on the IEEE 802.1 activities please look at: http://www.ieee802.org/1/
