  1. Welcome to St. Anne’sKey Stage 4Pathways Evening13thFebruary 2013 Act Justly, love tenderly, walk humbly with your God

  2. WHAT THIS EVENING IS ABOUT: Information about Key Stage 4 study. So far: Yr9 students have been introduced to their Key stage 4 Pathways and been given information, advice and guidance in school. Your daughter has her Key Stage 4 Pathway Form. You have had the opportunity to visit subject areas and speak to subject teachers here on the Upper Site about KS4 courses.

  3. About Key Stage 4 Pathways • Your daughter will follow a KS4 Study Pathway. • Every student is an individual! • We have reviewed student progress and attainment and looked at outcomes predicted for key stage 4 to recommend what we feel is the most appropriate Pathway for each student.

  4. the Key Stage 4 core curriculum All Students will follow the GCSE Core Curriculum: • English Language and Literature • Mathematics • Science • RE This makes a total of 6 GCSE courses.

  5. General certificate of education (GCSE’s) GCSE’s are the qualification studied by our students at key Stage 4. • GCSE courses have a final exam at the end of yr11 called a ‘terminal exam’. • Some GCSE courses have ‘Controlled Assessment’ as part of the course. This is where a student completes coursework under supervision and gains some of the final GCSE grade from this mark. • The grades awarded for GCSE are from A* - G and each grade is allocated from a mark out of 100%.

  6. Languages • The Dfe (Department for Education) and a number of Universities advise that students who are likely to be able to achieve a good GCSE in a Language should be identified and encouraged to take one. However this might not be the best thing for all students. HUMANITIES (History and Geography) • Studying a Humanities at GCSE level is also a good thing for many students in providing a broad and balanced curriculum with ‘academic rigour’.

  7. other Ks4 Pathway choices offered At key stage 4 • Art • Drama • PE • Music • Design Technology, Graphics, Textiles, Food • Information Technology • Computer Science (for some) • Child Development (for some) Students may not always be able to study their first choice subject(s) but we will work to get the best match that we can.

  8. In addition to the core GCSE curriculum and Student Pathways: • All students have a taught double PE lesson on their weekly timetable. • Personal Social and Health Education, Citizenship, Careers Guidance and Work Related Learning are taught to students in a variety of ways.

  9. progression to Key Stage 5PATHWAYS • In our 6th form we work to offer an individual Key Stage 5 Curriculum Pathway for each student as a continuation of Key stage 4 study. • In the 6th form we offer a range of AS and A2 Qualifications and BTEC Level 3 Qualifications. We also offer the opportunity to study some Level 2 Learning (GCSE equivalent) and to retake English Language and / or Mathematics at GCSE Level.

  10. The right Pathway Every student is an individual. We hope that by providing guidance, information and support all of our students will begin their Key Stage 4 Pathway with an appropriate curriculum which meets their interests, needs and aspirations.

  11. The process What happens now? Students should return their completed Student Pathway Form to school signed by their parent/carer to Ms Lawrence by Friday 7th March. And then? The forms will be processed and any discussions regarding alternative subject choices or changes will take place after half term. Following this students will be given confirmation of their Ks4 Pathway. It may not be possible for all students to get all of their first Pathway choices, which is why it is important to choose reserve choices carefully
