  1. RomansPaul’s Exposition of “Salvation by Grace Through Faith” Lesson 9a IV. God’s Righteousness: Solving The Problem Of Sin Romans 5:1 - 6:23 Page 64

  2. IV. GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS: SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF SIN (5:1-6:23) We have just studied -- A. Christians have confidence that the problem has been solved. (5:1-21) Now we will study -- B. Christians have an obligation to live apart from sin. (6:1-23)

  3. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • Grace and sin are not compatible (1,2) • Paul taught that God’s grace abounded more than sin (5:20) • Some might reason then that the more one sins, the more of God’s grace is shown, bringing even more glory to God (1) • Paul said “certainly not” (2)

  4. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • Christians cannot be dead and alive to sin at once (2) • When we die to sin, we can no longer live in sin (2) • We are separated from sin • “Dying to sin” and “living in sin” are totally incompatible

  5. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • Illustration about following Christ’s example about sin (3-11) • Those baptized in Christ are baptized into His death (3) (1) Baptism is a burial (2) Baptism places one into Christ and into the blessings found in Christ (Eph.1:3) (3) People dead in sin are made dead to sin when they are baptized (4) Believers are baptized into the [benefits of the] death of Christ (5) Baptized persons are raised to live a new life just as Christ did

  6. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • Illustration about following Christ’s example about sin (3-11) • Those baptized in Christ are baptized into His death (3) • To join Him in His death we must die to sin and be baptized • Baptism changes our relationship with God when He forgives the guilt of sin • We are buried with Christ in baptism and are raised to walk in newness of life just as Christ was buried and raised from the dead (4)

  7. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • Illustration about following Christ’s example about sin (3-11) (Continued) • Baptism is a likeness of His death (5) (1) Christ was crucified because of [others’] sins (Rom. 5:16); we must crucify our “old man” [repent] because of our own sins (verses 3, 6). (2) He was buried to be separated from the world of sin (verse 6); we must be buried [baptized] to be separated (James 2:26) from the world of sin. (verse 4). (3) He was raised to possess a new [different] and better life (verse 10); we are raised to experience a new [different] and better life (verses 4, 8).

  8. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • Illustration about following Christ’s example about sin (3-11) • Death no longer has dominion over Christ (9); He lives to God (10) • Christ died only once for the sin of others, not His own (10) • Our attitude must be that we have died once and for all to the power of sin (11) • And, we are alive to God through Christ (11)

  11. B. Christians have an obligation to live apart from sin Romans 6:1-23 We have just studied that -- • Grace and sin are not compatible (1,2) • Christians cannot be dead and alive to sin at once (2) • Illustration about following Christ’s example about sin (3-11) Now we will study -- • The Christian’s body is a tool to serve God (12-14) • Illustration of masters and servants (15-19) • Obvious reasons to live apart from sin (20-23)

  12. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • The Christian’s body is a tool to serve God (12-14) • Paul’s conclusion: Do not let sin reign in you body that you should obey it in its lusts (12) • We are to use the members of our bodies as tools in service to God, not unto sin (13) • Why? Because we are alive from the dead, and sin shall not have dominion over us (14) • We are not under law (one with no forgiveness) but under (God’s law of) grace (14)

  13. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • Illustration of masters and servants (15-19) • So, “Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not” (15) • To do so would make us servants of sin -- for whom you obey, it is your master (16) • Christians have changed masters from sin to righteousness because they made that choice (18)

  14. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • Illustration of masters and servants (15-19) • The Romans could understand about slaves and masters, rewards and punishments (19) • Paul wanted them to understand they were slaves to righteousness for holiness, not lawlessness (19)

  15. B. Christians Have An Obligation To Live Apart From Sin Romans 6:1-23 • Obvious reasons to live apart from sin (20-23) • When they were slaves to sin, they were free from righteousness, no beneficial fruit, the end -- spiritual death (20,21) • They were now free from sin, salves to God, beneficial fruit to holiness, the end -- everlasting life (22) • Bottom line -- For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ (23)

  16. End of Lesson 9a
