How does Coolant Leak Affect the Performance of a Car

A coolant leak is a progenitor to a deadly engine problem. Thus, fixing coolant leak timely should have to be given top preference. Coolant leak causes car engine to overheat. It reduces the overall engine performance. Sometimes, it can lead to engine misfiring as well. Remember- the optimum level of antifreeze needs to be maintained as it keeps the car engine cool in summer and prevents the engine from freezing in winter. If you find your car is leaking coolant, then consult a car serviceman and fix the leak as soon as possible.

  1. HOW DOES COOLANT LEAK AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF A CAR?

  2. Combustion process generates an excessive amount of heat energy which could cause engine overheating.

  3. The cooling system absorbs and disperse the heat generated by an internal combustion engine.

  4. By doing so, the cooling system protects the engine from the heat generated by itself.

  5. Besides, it also safeguards the engine against the extreme environmental temperature.

  6. Coolant is a mixture of ethylene or propylene glycol and water. It flows throughout the system to keep the system cool.

  7. Coolant leak might adversely affect the performance of a car.

  8. SIGNS OF A COOLANT LEAK

  9. Warning signs as mentioned below which show that the coolant is leaking should not be neglected.

  10. PUDDLE OF LIGHT GREEN OR ORANGE FLUID UNDER THE HOOD. • ILLUMINATION OF COOLANT WARNING LIGHT. • RUSTY RADIATOR. • LOWER COOLANT LEVEL.

  11. IMPACTS OF COOLANT LEAK

  12. ENGINE OVERHEATING

  13. Operational temperature of an engine ranges from 190 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit.

  14. The primary function of the cooling system to keep the temperature of an engine in this range.

  15. However, lack of a suitable amount of coolant could trigger several problems in the engine including engine overheating.

  16. So, leakage of the coolant should never be neglected.

  17. Cracks or pinholes responsible for the coolant leaks should be identified and repaired.

  18. POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE

  19. If the temperature of an engine exceeds beyond the range of operational temperature, then it could negatively affect the power output of an engine.

  20. So, a sudden reduction of the power output of an engine could be considered as another major impact of a coolant leak.

  21. The coolant level needs to be inspected and if necessary the coolant should be flushed to enhance the efficiency of the cooling system.

  22. ENGINE MISFIRE

  23. The temperature of an engine with a failed cooling system rises rapidly which could damage the valves and other components of the engine.

  24. It could lead to engine misfiring.

  25. BOTTOM LINE

  26. The fact is that the coolant leakage might affects the performance of a car in very adverse ways.

  27. So, signs which show that the coolant is leaking should not be neglected.

  28. Timely action should be taken to repair the cracks or damages responsible for the coolant leak.
