Great men of god noted for them • Isaac • Genesis 24:63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening;… • David • Psalm 55:17 Evening and morning and at noon         I will pray, and cry aloud,          And He shall hear my voice. • Psalm 63:6 When I remember You on my bed,         I meditate on You in the night watches. Daniel 6:10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.

Jesus, our example, engaged in them. • Mark 1:35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. • Luke 5:16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed. • Luke 6:12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. • Matthew 26:36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.”

  4. Why have private devotions? • To draw near to God.

Draw near to god • 1 Chronicles 28:9 “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever. • 2 Chronicles 15:2 And he went out to meet Asa, and said to him: “Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.

Draw near to god • Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. • James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

  7. Why have private devotions? • To draw near to God. • To receive spiritual nourishment.

  9. Why have private devotions? • To draw near to God. • To receive spiritual nourishment. • To find peace and stability.

  10. Find peace and stability. Peace • Philippians 4:6-7 Stability • Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet         And a light to my path. • Psalm 119:165 Great peace have those who love Your law,         And nothing causes them to stumble.

  11. How do we go about it? • Find a time and place. • Inside, outside – doesn’t matter. • Morning, noon, night – makes no difference. • Needs to be quiet and solitary – limit distractions. • Make it a habit.

  12. How do we go about it? Approach God in prayer. • Give thanks. Colossians 4:2 • Confess sins. 1 John 1:9 • Make supplication for needs. Philippians 4:6 • Intercede on behalf of others. 1 Timothy 2:1-2

  13. How do we go about it? Spend time meditating. Contemplate: • The Lord Himself. Psalm 63:6 • His wonderful works. Psalm 77:12 • His word. Psalm 119:15, 48, 97-99, 148 • Things that are wholesome and praiseworthy. Philippians 4:8

  14. How do we go about it? Spend time praising God. • Sing hymns of praise. James 5:13, Ephesians 5:19 • Praise Him for His works, His character, His kindness and love, His blessings, etc.

Conclusion • Living in a sinful world, there is much that would • Fill our lives with stress and anxiety • Pull us away from God and things that are good. • Making room for private devotions in our lives will help us to • Walk closer with our Father in heaven. • Be strengthened as we walk with Him. • If it’s good enough for Jesus, it should be good enough for us.
