  3. National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) • The Joint Commission • NPSG established in 2002 • Focuses on patient safety • Revised in 2010

  4. Patient Safety Goals in Various Health Care Settings • Ambulatory Health Care • Behavioral Health Care • Critical Access Hospital • Home Care • Hospital • Laboratory • Long Term Care   • Medicare/Medicaid Long Term Care • Office-Based Surgery

  5. Clinical Agency Goals • Similar core goals for all clinical agencies • Various goals tailored to specific clinical agencies

  6. Patient Safety Advisory Group • Advises Joint Commission on : -evidence for suggestions -practicality and cost to implement • Make adjustments to number of goals • Reviews suggested actions for patient safety

  7. Revisions to NPSG • Clarified / streamlined some elements • Hospital-Some goals retired (reduced number from 11 ) • Moved some to standards
