  1. Customary & Metric Measurement Converting between units: Length, Weight, Capacity

  2. Length • In the customary system, length is measured in inches, feet, yards, and miles. • The length of a leaf would be measured in inches. • The trunk of a tree would be measured in feet. • The height of the entire tree might be measured in yards. • The distance from here to the Dollar General would be measured in miles. 12 in = 1 ft 3 ft = 1 yard 5,280 ft = 1 mile

  3. Metric Units for Length • Kilometer (km) – a little smaller than a mile • Meter (m) – about the width of a door • Centimeter (cm) – about the width of a large paperclip • Millimeter (mm) – about the thickness of a dime 1,000 mm = 1 m 100 cm = 1 m 10 decimeters (dm) = 1 m 1 kilometer (km) = 1,000 m

  4. If you are going from smaller units to larger units, you will need less. So, you would DIVIDE by the conversion factor . Measurements of Length: 12 in = 1 ft 3 ft = 1 yard 5,280 ft = 1 mile 48 in = ___ ft 64 in = ___ ft ____ in 3.5 ft = ___ in

  5. How might this look on TAKS? Juan measured the distance from the corner of his house to the corner of his friend’s house. it was a distance of 384 feet. How many yards was Juan’s house from his friend’s house? A 1,152 yards B 387 yards C 128 yards D 32 yards

  6. Capacity • In the customary system, capacity is measured in fluid ounces (fl oz), cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. 8 fl oz= 1 cup 2 cups = 1 pint 2 pints = 1 quart 4 quarts = 1 gallon

  7. Metric Units of Capacity & Volume • Milliliter (ml) – about the amount in an eye dropper • Liter (l) – 2 liter bottler of Coke 1,000 ml = 1 liter 1,000 liters = 1 kiloliter

  8. If you are going from smaller units to larger units, you will need less. So, you would DIVIDE by the conversion factor . • Measurement of Capacity: 8 fl oz= 1 cup 2 cups = 1 pint 2 pints = 1 quart 4 quarts = 1 gallon 12 cups = ____ pints 11 cups = ____ quarts ___ pints

  9. More Practice • 26 quarts = ___ gallons • 10 cups = ___ fl oz • Hope went to the store and wanted to buy a pint of milk but the store didn't have it. It only came in cups. How many cups does she need to make a pint?

  10. How might this look on TAKS? The table below shows the liquid capacity of 4 household objects. Object Capacity Bucket 256 fluid ounces Punch bowl 240 fluid ounces Fish tank 640 fluid ounces Sink 512 fluid ounces Which of these objects has a capacity of exactly 80 cups? F Bucket G Punch bowl H Fish tank J Sink

  11. Weight • In the customary system, ounces, pounds, and tons are used to measure weight. • An apple would be measured in ounces. • A basket of apples would be measured in pounds. • A truckload of apples would be measured in tons. 16 oz = 1 lb 2,000 lb = 1 ton

  12. Metric Units for Mass • Milligram (mg) = takes 1,000 mg to make a gram • Gram ( g) = about one paperclip • Kilogram (kg) = about the mass of a book 1,000 mg = 1 g 1,000 g = 1 kg

  13. If you are going from smaller units to larger units, you will need less. So, you would DIVIDE by the conversion factor . Measurement of Weight 16 oz = 1 lb 2,000 lb = 1 ton 64 ounces = ___ lbs 6,500 lbs = ___ tons
