  1. Film Techniques in Violent FilmsSound & MusicHart’s War By Dale Duffield

  2. Scene: Sacrifice Role of this Scene: To show that even while imprisoned, the prisoners can still do good for their allies. Reality of how harsh the punishment for the allies were. The courage and honour of the colonel sacrificing himself

  3. Music • Music is used in this scene to inspire fear for the soldier’s lives and then again, to create sadness for the colonel’s death and his sacrifice for his comrades. • The Music fades in and out of this scene to make events like the explosions of the ammunition factories and the gunshot of more effect

  4. Natural Sound • Examples of Natural Sound used in this movie are; snow crunching beneath footsteps, Dirt falling from ceiling, The sound of the pistol being drawn from its case. • These simple things add atmosphere to the scene, making you feel like your actually there watching these things happen.

  5. Sound effects • The explosion of Ammunitions factories and gunshot from the POW camp’s officer’s pistol • The explosion of the ammunitions factories probably should have been quieter than that of the gunshot as the gunshot was closer and therefore would have been louder.

  6. Dialogue • Dialogue is used in this scene to instil fear in the audience for the prisoners lives and again for the colonel’s life. • The background yelling and ordering in a foreign language also adds to the intensity of this scene

  7. Music, SFX & Violence • In this Scene viewers are made to watch the colonel die after saving other soldiers from the similar fate. The explosions of the ammunitions factories in the background makes the audience feel happy as the colonel completed his mission successfully but sad that it had to end with his death.
