  1. Odyssey of the MindPresentation of the programme2014 – 2015International School of Geneva Now become OFFICIAL !!

  2. What is Odyssey of the Mind (OOTM)? • International Creative Problem-Solving Programme. • Focus is to develop divergent, independent-thinking abilities (thinking outside the box, taking the path less traveled) through a challenging, but FUN, learning process. • Team-effort, based loosely upon a sports model. • Teams usually demonstrate their solutions at a tournament. Every team presenting a solution is a WINNER! • Participants are K-College, but compete within age Divisions • OOTM develops real-life communication and brainstorming skills, and rewards creativity and “calculated” risk-taking in the solution of complex problems.

  3. HOW DOES OOTM WORK? - Key Element 1Participation and Team work Everything must be child-oriented “Your child has to find an interest in the programme, not yours!” 5 – 7 students in a team + coach • Division I : Year 3 – 5 • Division II : Above 11 years old No Outside Assistance Each Team MUST conceive, design, construct, and perform their own ideas. Help external to the team is termed Outside Assistance (OA).

  4. HOW DOES OOTM WORK? - Key Element 2Creativity: Spontaneous problem Quick Problem solving testers 2-10 minutes, solving the problems given on site Practice makes better Students get better at spontaneous problems as they experience more and more problems. We regularly practice these with a spontaneous coach. We have an organized Saturday to do just spontaneous problems. 8-10 problem stations in the Gym, in team rotation. The date is: January 31, 2015

  5. HOW DOES OOTM WORK? - Key Element 3Long-term problem Performance in 8 minutes Create a performance that includes all answers to the given complex tasks. It involves many creative elements such as drama, art, music, mechanics, and so on. 5 Problems to choose from: Each team will select a problem and start working on the Long-term problem in October. Swiss Local Competition Saturday 7th March 2015

  6. HOW DOES OOTM WORK? - Key Element 3Long-term problem 2014-15 5 problems to choose from Problem No.1 : Runaway “Train” The team’s problem is to design, build and operate vehicle(s)that will travel on and be guided by tracks and will also make stops at different stations. While traveling between stations, the vehicle(s) must overcome tasks chosen from a given list (travel uphill, tow something, go backwards, etc.). The performance will include a humorous conductor character. The final trip will include a victory lap where a vehicle will display a flag or banner.

  7. HOW DOES OOTM WORK? - Key Element 3Long-term problem 2014-15 Problem No.2 : Experiencing Technical Difficulties The problem is to design, build, and use devices that are powered by rubber bands to complete tasks. Teams will choose the tasks from a given list (ring a bell, raise a flag, play music, open book, etc.), but will also include two team-created tasks. The presentation will also include a mysterious engineer character. The team must also fit their entire solution in two suitcases!

  8. HOW DOES OOTM WORK? - Key Element 3Long-term problem 2014-15 Problem No.3 : The Stackable Structure (classics – Drama based) In this problem teams will put a video game spin on the story of Pandora’s Box. During the performance a Gamer Character will take on this team-created multi-level “game” inspired by the Greek myth. Problem No.4 : Lose your marbles (balsa tower – highly technical) The problem is to design, build, and test a structure, made only of balsa wood and glue that will balance and support as much weight as possible. The structure will also hold five marbles that will be released one-at-a-time during weight placement as a result of a team-created device removing a piece of the structure.

  9. HOW DOES OOTM WORK? - Key Element 3Long-term problem 2014-15 Problem No.5 : Silent Movie The team will create and present a performance that depicts a Director Character that produces and presents a silent movie. The movie will feature a humorous Character that commits three silly acts. There are no sound effects within the movie and none of the cast can speak as part of the movie. The team will also create subtitles and an original musical score for the movie that will be played on at least one team created instrument. The performance will also include a short trailer of a coming attraction.

  10. The Three Components of OOTM Scoring : 3 Components of OOTM Long-Term Style Spontaneous • 50 Points • Elaboration of Long-Term • Sparkle, Polish • Team Chosen Elements • 100 Points • On the Spot • Anything Goes • 3 Types • Verbal • Hands on- Verbal-Hands-on • 200 Points • Specific Rules • Open-Ended • All Solutions Presented in Skit Form (8-min) Long-Term + Style + Spontaneous = Total Score Raw Scores are “Adjusted” so the team with highest raw score (for each component) receives the full possible score (200, 100, or 50 pts for the three components). Other team scores adjusted proportionally
