  10. Gender and Diversity • Gender intersects with race & ethnicity, class, LGBTQ+, age, disability, religion etc. •  For example, how is the recruitment similar or different for white women and faculty of color?

Discussion I: Sharing Good Practices • Write down 1-3 ideas on a post-it that worked well in search committees you have worked on in the past • Discuss with a partner at your table – 3 minutes each • Share 1 idea you liked with the group at large • Place each post-it note on one of the large papers by stage of the faculty search

  12. Five Stages of a Faculty Search • Define criteria and qualities • Actively recruit a diverse pool • Review and identify the long/short list • Conduct an effective on campus interview • Recommend finalist(s) to the Chair

  13. Developing the Applicant Pool Our Goal: Develop a diverse applicant pool with candidates. . . . . . from different: • Gender identities • Ethnicities • Points of View within the Discipline . . . and with excellent qualifications/credentials

Key Points from Atlantic Article • Ed Yong’s article regarding who he cited as experts • Yong: • Examined his process (e.g., always going to the same set of experts) • Spent more time to find diverse set of experts • Created a dataset to track experts in his science articles • Analyzed the gender breakdown by his published articles • Average female experts now ranges 40% to 60% • This pattern of increased inclusion also pertains to URM experts

Journalism -- Academia: Judging “Most Qualified” • Before – Yong used shortcuts: • Calling on same experts over and over • Relying on experts other reporters have ”vetted” • Now – Yong seeks to highlight new voices • Journalism thrives by seeking fresh perspectives/voices • Avoiding the same small cadre of well-trod names Other journalists have replicated his efforts

  16. Discussion II: How to Broaden the Pool? What strategies increase the diversity of qualified candidates. . . • For the initial applicant pool? • For the pool from which candidates for campus visits are selected?

Judging ”Most Qualified” in Academia • Relying on proxies in assessing quality • Prestige of institution • Numbers of publications • Prestige of publications and impact factors • Letters of recommendation • Consider your definition of excellence • Example: Northeastern’s inclusion of contributions to diversity in T&P dossier • Find those women and minority men who would likely succeed

  18. Discussion III: Takeaways • Write down 1-3 ideas you plan to take back to your search committee – 1 per post-it note • Discuss at your table what everyone wrote down • Share with the group • Put your post-it notes on the large sheet of paper
