What is the JIS? • The Washington State Judicial Information System (JIS) is the primary information system for courts, serving as the statewide clearinghouse for criminal history information including protection-type orders and outstanding warrants.  • The Judicial Information System is a suite of applications that facilitate the adjudication of cases in Washington courts.

  3. Authorities for the Judicial Information System • Judicial Information System Committee Rule 1 • A statewide judicial information system to be developed. [effective 1976] • Judicial Information System Committee Rule 18 • Specifies which records are added to JIS. • [effective 1994, amended 2001] • RCW 26.50.160 • To prevent competing protection orders and assist courts when issuing orders the JIS database shall include names of parties in specified actions and criminal history. [1995 c 246 § 18.] • Trial Court Rules • Specify content of charging documents • Superior Court Criminal Rule CrR 2.1(a)(2) • Limited Jurisdiction Court Criminal Rule CrRLJ 2.1(b)(3)(ii)

  11. From 1977 until 1994, SCOMIS was the case management system for superior courts and JIS was for district/municipal courts. SCOMIS JIS In 1994 superior courts began using JIS for statewide offender history and accounting. In 1997 superior courts began using JIS for cases involving protection-type orders.
