  2. Ichwerde die Unterschiedelernen! • The German verb “werden” has many uses: • Full verb (to become) • Futur • Passive voice • Konjunktiv

  3. “werden” as a full verb • As a full verb, “werden” simply means “to become”. • Examples: • Ich möchte Arzt werden. (I would like to become a doctor.) • Ich wurde nervös. (past tense, but still a full verb: I became nervous.)

  4. “werden” as used in the future • “werden” can be used to indicate the future. • Grammatical Structure • “werden” is conjugated, in the present tense, and goes in the second position in the sentence. • You need another verb that says what you will be doing in the future. This verb stays in the infinitive form and goes to the end of the sentence. • Examples: • IchwerdemeineHausaufgabenmachen. • Nächsten Sommer werden wir nach Deutschland fliegen. • Hans wird es kaufen. • Was wirst du am Wochenende machen?

  6. “werden” in the passive voice • “werden” is also used to indicate passive voice • In passive voice, the subject need not be mentioned. The emphasis is on the action that happened. • Grammatical Structure: • “werden” is conjugated for the subject of the sentence. It can be in the present tense or in the past tense. • A past participle (ge-verb) is placed at the end of the sentence. • Examples: • Der Brief wirdgeschrieben. (The letter is being written.) • 1756 wurde Mozart geboren. (Mozart was born in 1756.) • Die Stadtwurdeim 2. Weltkriegzerstört. (The city was destroyed in WWII.) • Note: this is NOT the same as saying “Die Stadtwarzerstört.”

  8. “werden” in the subjunctive • The subjunctive (Konjunktiv) is used to express wishes, polite requests, or non-real situations. • “werden” is not the only verb used to indicate subjunctive, but it is the most frequently used. • Other common subjunctives: möchte, könnte, wollte, sollte, wäre, hätte, wüsste, wünschte... • Grammatical Structure: • A subjunctive form of werden is conjugated and in the second position. • An infinitive is at the end of the clause. • Examples: • Ich würde meinen Freund öfter besuchen, wenn ich nur Zeit dafür hätte. • Was würdest du machen, wenn du eine Reise nach Köln gewonnen hättest?
