  1. The Gospel According to Mark part 16“The true nature of the Bread of Heaven”Mark 8:1-21

  2. The message Jesus hoped the disciples would see, is that Jesus would in no way leave unfed, those who were committed to Him. John 10:11) “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”

  3. John 21:15-17) “Feed My lambs,” Tend My sheep,” Feed My sheep.” Here, Jesus is demonstrating through the physical feeding the metaphor of spiritually feeding.

  4. Jesus is indistinctive, He doesn’t send the locals home and feed those from afar, no Jesus meets the needs of all you follow Him.

  5. First, He had already done this very same thing oncebefore. Second, this crowd was smaller than the first one; as we will find out later. Third, do they actually believe that the place (thewilderness), has any bearing on Jesus ability to do anything.

  6. The disciples were not even on the right page with Jesus, they were wondering where to obtain enough food for the people, while Jesus was planning to repeat a miracle He had done before.

  7. Jesus meets our needs completely, not half way or just some what, but all our needs. And, in fact that is exactly what we see here, seven baskets of left over food, and there were twelve baskets the last time.

  8. The bread that Jesus passes out that day was not small pieces of seven loaves and a few fish; it was heavenly bread. It is no coincidence that Jesus is also known as the “Bread of Life.” John 6:48

  9. And, not only are we filled, but there is more to spare, more than we can possibly hold. Malachi 4:10b) “And pour out for you such a blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.”

  10. Mark makes it clear the only reason they are there, was to dispute with Him.They used the cover of wanting a sign, to open the dialogue.

  11. Jesus had used signs as a way of developing peoples faith in Him. The Pharisees had no intention of coming to faith in Jesus, either that day or any other.

  12. They could correctly read the signs of nature, but were unequivocal failures at reading the sign they had been given.

  13. Jesus was talking about the three days He would spend in the grave, just as Jonah had been three days in the belly of the fish. This would have been a sign that met their special criteria, rising from the dead after three days would meet any level of criteria.

  14. But, Jesus words were not about the physical bread, but about the corruption of the Pharisees. Jesus was saying the Pharisees were that corruptible influence. Not a very flattering thing to say about the religious leaders of God’s people.

  15. Discernment is a discipline, and it must be cultivated. One must look beyond the obvious, spend time in reflection, prayer and contemplation. One might ask, “How do you know this is not just a straight forward miracle of feeding hungry people?

  16. Jesus clearly was asserting the feedingitself, the bread and the leftovers were important elements in the lesson; and they failed to understand it. Jesus is our Bread, and He gives Himself to us in abundance. His bread is pure and not corrupted by the leaven of the Pharisaical teachings.

  17. This Bread is offered to any who call upon Him, all who follow and obey will receive the bread and be filled, completely satisfied! Matthew 4:4) “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
