  2. Test Tomorrow • Today is study Guide day • But first….we have to cover Daoism, Legalism and Confucianism • Give back tests and progress reports • Switch seats

  7. Think back… • What made ancient civilizations like Egypt, and Mesopotamia successful…???

  8. Geography!! China is surrounded by the Himalaya Mountains = Protection! They also have fertile land because they are near the Huang He River OR Yellow River

  9. How did they organize their country? • They had a dynasty! • (hint: If my mom is a teacher then....)

  10. Shang Dynasty • Shang Dynasty- the FIRST dynasty • -started in 1776 BC to ~ 1100 BC They are famous for: • Using picture symbols as their written language • Working with Bronze • Creating a LUNAR calendar (Lunar= based off moon)

  11. Zhou Dynasty • Took over after Shang Dynasty (1100-221 BC) • What did they do? They began using Mandate of Heaven Used Iron instead of bronze, which was cheaper and harder

  12. Mandate of Heaven • The belief that their ruler’s power came from the gods. • They had divine right to rule.

  14. China • The three “ism’s” Chinese Philosophies: • Legalism • Daoism • Confucianism

  19. Advise the President! • Write a letter to the President advising him to adopt one of the ancient philosophies. Include: A description of the philosophy. At least 2 reasons why he should use it.
