Wild and Scenic Rivers Act • Passed into law on October 2, 1968. • Amended October 4, 1984. • Amended a second time on November 17, 1986. • This law is specifically for the United States only. • As of January 1, 1989, there were 6 Wild and Scenic Rivers in National Wildlife Refuges, totaling 1,385 miles, all in Alaska. What’s the point? • This laws design is to protect and conserve natural, beautiful rivers for use by present and future generations. • The first amendment added the regulation of the Lamprey Eel in rivers. • The second amendment added the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in Oregon and Washington. • Environmental Issues: misuse/ destruction of rivers, Tragedy of the Commons.

  3. Who manages it? • It is managed by: Special Management Areas (SMAs), Bonneville Power Admin. and Corps of Engineers, and Secretary of Agriculture. • Managed also by Bureau of Land Management’s National Landscape Conservation System.
