  3. Sea areas of Piracy Incidents The Gulf of Aden : 116 Off Somalia : 80 Nigeria : 28 Bangladesh : 17 Off Malaysia : 16 The Red Sea : 15 Indonesia : 15 *Somali pirates= total 217 (+Off Oman 4+the Arabian Sea 1+Indian Ocean 1) *Successful hijacking rate was decreased resulted by navies presence

  4. A New International Cooperation Maritime Security Centre, Horn of Africa ( MSCHOA ) run by EU established the International Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) Multinational Naval assets deploy within the area to protect.

  5. Somali Pirates : Increasing areas In 2008, most of incidents were in the Gulf of Aden in 2008 In 2009, incident areas were expanding into the Indian Ocean Some of these took place 1,000 nm far from Somali coast. EU Nations extended naval operations as far as the Seychelles

  6. Types of vessels attacked In the case of Somali pirates; Bulk carriers : 109 Containers : 63 General cargo Chemical/product tanker Crude oil tanker Tug and Trawler Fishing boat Low dry deck with full load, slow speed, small crew are vulnerable

JMSDF Contribution Surface Escort Mission The First Surface Escort Force: March 30-July 22 by two ships, escorted 121 vessels The Second Surface Escort Force : July 28-November 2 by two ships, escorted 248 vessels The Third Surface Escort Force : November 7- by two JMSDF ships, escorted 193 The Forth Surface Escort Force will be taking over the mission Air Patrol Mission The First Air Patrol Force : July 11- October 3 by two P-3C Patrol Aircrafts generated 590 h operation flight and confirmed 5,000 vessels The Second Air Patrol Force will be taking over the mission.
