Welcome to VMS

Welcome to Voorheesville Middle School! Our goal is to ensure that all middle school students have the knowledge and skills to be prepared for their future. We focus on academic and social skills, college and career readiness, and supporting academic behaviors. Our curriculum is rigorous, and we offer acceleration opportunities in math and science. We also prioritize the whole child, with a focus on social-emotional development and a wide range of extracurricular activities. Stay informed and involved through our communication channels and transition events.

  3. High School Readiness OUR GOAL To ensure that all middle school students have attained the knowledge and skills to be prepared for their future. Academic & Social Skills College and Career Readiness Academic Behaviors

  4. SUPPORTING ACADEMIC SKILLS: Tips for Parents • Stay involved in your child’s education; • Stay aware of your child’s homework and school demands; • Attend school events; • Try to connect outside experiences to school learning to increase interest and relevance!

SUPPORTING ACADEMIC Behaviors: Tips for Parents • Ensure that your child has the materials and place to study at home; • Set a regular time for homework; • Encourage your child to be responsible for organization and homework; • Provide your child with a range of experiences to allow him/her to identify areas of strength; • Talk to your child.

School Counselor • Providesacademic, social and emotional support to students • Provides individual counseling, group counseling, classroom presentations and career exploration opportunities • Meets with all 6th grade students in small groups within the first month of school • Coordinates parent-teacher conferences

  8. Acceleration • Math Acceleration Starts in Grade 7-this leads to AP Calculus. Other AP courses such as AP Statistics and AP Physics are still possible if you do not accelerate in MS math • Complete Two Years of Math in Grade 7 • Take Algebra I in 8th Grade • Other Pathways • Can take the “Challenge Exam” at the end of 7th grade • 7th grade teacher can recommend during the year

  9. Acceleration • Science Acceleration begins in Grade 8 • Key concepts from Grade 8 Science are integrated into Science in Grades 6 & 7 • Earth Science in Grade 8 • Current Rubrics for Math and Science are on our website

Procedures and Policies • Drop-Off Before School • Parking lot by the VMS Wing, students walk to the VMS Main Entrance • Pick-Up and Drop-Off During the Day • Use the VMS Main Entrance • Electronic Devices • Smart Phones/Cell Phones are not permitted during school hours • Best option: Left home or off in locker all day • Notes (Dismissal other than Home) • Brought to the VMS Main Office in the morning

Communication • Parent Portal • Log-in ID and password • Student grades • 3 and 6 week grade book updates • Report Cards • SNN • Change your preferences so you get weekly middle school messages • Purple Newsletter • Middle School Website • If you need to get a message to your child during the school day, call the VMS Office at 518-765-3314 • Each grade level has that night’s homework available to view on the school website under “Grade Level Information”
