  1. The Laptop Classroom Reporting System (go to http://homework.uoregon.edu/pub/sa.html For more information and trial demo)

  2. Pedagogical Design, Philosophy and Implementation • Content is pushed out to student laptops • Students work together in small groups to analyze, manipulate, annotate, edit, examine content using provided IT tools • Results of each laptop client are published to a “Global Canvas”, managed by the instructor • Variance in student work/approach then frames the ensuing, robust discussino

  3. Modes of Operation • Simple text • Symbol manipulation and arrangement; iconic timeline construction • Spreadsheet exercises • Data analysis using simulations or virtual labs; Graphing of data • Image annotation and analysis • Modeling and reporting of parameters

  4. Text Example • What the student sees on their screen – they type in their text and then publish

  5. Global Canvas in Text Mode

  6. Symbol/Icon Mode • Students drag and drop icons into boxes

  7. Global Canvas View

  8. Spreadsheet Example • Students input their choices for parameters

  9. Global Canvas – Spreadsheet (which can be sorted)

  10. Image Tool • Student can annotate sets of images from a list or library of image data

  11. Image Tool Global Canvas – can select and display individual student annotations; can also be used as a means for students to upload images to be displayed in class

  12. Graphing Example • Students can plot point on graph via mouse click or type data into X Y table

  13. Graphing Global Canvas –can display both graph and student data

  14. Parameter Reporting

  15. Parameter Report Canvas • All the individual parameters that constitute a model are published at once – this is very powerful for pedagogy and allows students to visualize and understand sensitivity to parameters

  16. Global Canvas Lab Report • Example “Homework” Submission

  17. Summary • This is a real time classroom reporting system which allows the instructor to cycle through the various responses fast and easily • Can be used also for submission of homework or other out of class activities • It works and its scalable
