  1. Causes of Primary and Secondary Lymphedema Lymphedema is a condition where there is swelling in the limbs, whether one or more at the same time. This is more common among people who have undergone cancer treatment. Lymphedema is usually the result of a blockage in the lymphatic system (a part of the immune system). Although there is no particular cure for lymphedema, it is essential to realize the cause of the lymphedema. Here are some of the primary and secondary causes of lymphedema:  Primary lymphedema Primary lymphedema is a rare condition that is inherited. This is related to problems that involve developmental issues of the lymph vessels. Some of these causes include:  Congenital lymphedema Congenital lymphedema or Milroy’s disease is a condition that starts during infancy which leads to an abnormal formation of the lymph nodes.  Lymphedema praecox Lymphedema praecox is also called Meige’s disease. This disorder causes signs of lymphedema to begin during puberty or pregnancy. In certain cases, it can also occur a little later until the age of 35.  Lymphedema tarda Lymphedema tarda is a late-onset lymphedema that occurs rarely. This is usually seen in people above the age of 35.  Secondary lymphedema Secondary lymphedema is any condition that results in the damage of lymph vessels or lymph nodes.

  2.  Cancer In the case where cancer cells begin blocking lymph vessels, lymphedema may occur. This could happen if a cancer tumour that is near a lymph node or vessels grows large enough to block the lymph fluid flow.  Surgery Surgery makes one prone to lymphedema. This happens in cases where the lymph node is removed to conduct a check for cancer or if the lymph nodes are injured when conducting surgery on their limbs involving blood vessels.  Infection An infection in the lymph node can cause an obstruction in the flow of lymph fluids. In tropical regions as well as sub-tropical regions, lymphedema causes due to infections are quite common. Developing countries also face more of a threat when it comes to lymphedema caused by infections.  Radiation treatment People who undergo radiation for cancer treatment often face the issue of lymphedema. The radiation causes inflammation and scarring of the lymph vessels or lymph nodes.
