Timecode. Timecode identifies each frame of video. Each video frame has a unique timecode. Hours : Minutes : Seconds ; Frames 01:25:47;12. Video standard and timecode. NTSC (replaced with ATSC in broadcasting on June 12, 2009) 29.97 frames/sec PAL 25 frames/sec.

  3. Final Cut Pro - First things first 1. Create your personal folder in the “Documents.” 2. Use your folder to keep everything. 3. Change system settings • Scratch disk • Digitized footage will be saved here. • Auto Save Vault • FCP will save your project here automatically every 30 minutes. • Waveform cache • Thumbnail cache

  6. Moving footage Playing • “Play” button • Space bar • JKL keys • J – play backwards • K - stop • L - play Shuttle slider, jog dial • Move the footage fast/slow while viewing it. Timecode window • You write down a specific time code without colons.

  7. Arrows Right • Moves the play-head forward for one frame Left • Moves the play-head back for one frame

  8. Editing Three-point editing • Mark IN and OUT on the clip. • They dictate what part of the clip you use. • Mark IN in the Timeline. • It decides where the incoming clip will go in the Timeline. Overwrite • Red button • Erases the footage replaced by a new clip. Insert • Yellow button • Pushes off the footage after the inserted clip.

  9. Trimming (fixing) Razor blade • Cuts a shot into two shots. • You can remove a shot by using the delete key. Ripple • Extends a shot. • The direction the tail is pointing is important. Roll • Moves an edit point. • Changes the length of two clips. • Doesn’t change the length of the sequence.

  10. Audio Main audio • Should be between -6 and -12 db on the audio meters. • Use the “Toggle Clip Overlay button.” • Increase/lower the audio level by manipulating the pink lines. • Use the audio cross fade (+3db) fro a smooth transition. • Or use keyframes.

  11. Using music from a CD First, copy the song from the CD to your computer. In Final Cut Pro: • File >> Import >> Files • Choose the song. • Start editing.

  12. Titling • “Text” for opening title • “Lower 3rd” for name and title • “Scrolling text” for credits • Insert a second video track for text overlay. • Check the source/destination alignment. • You have to render the sequence when you see a red line.

  13. Preparing the Leader • Leader: what you have to record before your project starts: • 30 seconds of bars and tone • The tone should be at -12. • 10 seconds of black • 10 seconds of slate • 10 seconds of countdown OR 10 seconds of black

  14. Slate • Class name • Student name • Project title • TRT (Total Running Time) • Finished date

  15. Printing procedures First of all – this is very important: • You have to be able to see the picture and hear the audio through the DV deck. If not, do the following: • Go to “View” and choose “Refresh AV devices” • If it doesn’t work, • go to “View” >> “External Video” >> “All Frames” • If it doesn’t work still, • ask me.

Printing procedures When you see and hear through the DV deck: • Select the right sequence in the Browser window. • Mark IN at the top of the sequence (timeline). • Mark OUT at the end of the sequence (timeline). • Go to the menu, “File,” and choose “Print to Video.” • Set up the leader and the trailer (10 sec of black). • Media “Print” should be IN to OUT. • “Automatically Start Recording” should be on.

  17. When you capture (or digitize), Capture necessary clips only. • Mark IN and OUT for each clip. • Give two/three-second handles (extra footage) to IN and OUT. • Log all the shots first. • Use the name which uniquely identifies each shot. • Batch capture “all items.” • If some clips have been already digitized, capture “offline items.”

  18. When you transfer • Create a back up. • Ingest the necessary clips.
