Reptile Features • Reptiles share many of the same characteristics: • Ectothermic vertebrates • Dry, scaly skin to protect its body from drying out • 3-chambered heart • Live on land and in water • Fertilization occurs internally • Eggs have a leathery shell • Newly hatched reptiles look just like the adults only smaller

  3. Snakes and Lizards Snakes Lizards 4 legs, ear openings, and movable eyelids Lizards live in warm or hot, often dry places Lizards range from the Komodo dragon (297 lbs, 10 ft) to the chameleon Marine iguanas and flying lizards are also in this group • No legs, no ear openings and immovable eyelids • Snakes have a keen sense of smell and can detect body heat of prey • Snakes use their tongue to gather info from the air • Snakes are carnivorous, able to swallow food whole by disconnecting its jaw • Some have venomthat it will inject to neutralize prey

  4. Alligators and Crocodiles ‘Gators Crocs Have long, pointed snouts The 4th tooth on the lower jaw fits outside when their mouth is closed • Most prefer watery environments like freshwater but some will venture into saltwater estuaries • Live in warmer regions like the tropics and subtropics • Use their long tails to propel themselves in the water • Raised eyes and nostrils allow them to remain below water until prey comes to drink and SNAP! • They eat: • Fish, turtles, large and small mammals and occasionally humans • Have broad, rounded snouts

  5. Turtles • Sea turtles live in the ocean • Tortoises live entirely on land • Terrapins are freshwater turtles that may come up on land • Turtles have 2 hard, bony shells that cover their bodies • Some the vertebrae and ribs are part of the shell • The shell is a good defense against predators • Some turtles can even pull their limbs inside and completely seal itself inside

  6. Dinosaurs • Some of the most famous reptiles are the extinct dinosaurs • These animals roamed the earth and came in various shapes and sizes • From herbivores to fierce carnivores, dinosaurs will remain a fascination for generations to come!
