IMD 2007 - background • Produced by Communities and Local Government • Measure overall deprivation and by “domain”: • Income; Employment; Health & Disability; Education, Skills & Training (children/young people & skills sub-domains); Barriers to Housing & Services (wider barriers & geographical barriers sub-domains); Crime; Living Environment (“indoors” & “outdoors” living environment sub-domains) • There are 2 supplementary indices • Income deprivation affecting children (IDACI); Income deprivation affecting older people (IDAOPI) • Available for Super Output Areas (c1,500 people in each) • 322 SOAs in Cumbria (32,482 in England) • More details are available from www.communities.gov.uk/indices

  3. How to use these graphs • Show proportion of SOAs in county/district that fall into each England decile (0-10%, 10-20% etc) • England has 10% of it’s SOAs in each decile • If an area had an identical deprivation profile to England each of its bars would show 10% • If an area has bigger bars towards the left-hand-side of the chart it is “more deprived” than the England average • If an area has bigger bars towards the right-hand-side of the chart it is “less deprived” than the England average
