  1. Welcome to SJP! Introductions: Tell us your name, year, major and why you are here today!

  2. Our Mission • . LMU Students for Justice in Palestine (LMUSJP) is an organization comprised of students, faculty, and staff committed to the promotion of human rights, communal liberation and empowerment, and social and economic justice for the Palestinian people. In solidarity with the indigenous population of Palestine, we strive to share the Palestinian narrative of occupation and apartheid within our own communities in an attempt to mobilize larger political efforts to end Israel’s current occupation of Palestinian territories. We aim to improve the representation of Palestinians in contemporary American discourse, and to highlight their history and experiences in order to create a more balanced debate regarding the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. LMUSJP seeks peace for the entire region, and sees organizing and advocacy for the autonomy and freedom of the Palestinian people as the first step in achieving this goal. As a group, we hope to challenge and sharpen the minds of our members and other individuals on campus through regular dialogue, debate, cultural celebration, and democratic political movement. LMUSJP values diversity and invites people of varied opinions and backgrounds within the framework of our mission to join the conversation.

  3. The BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) Campaign • A means to economically end the Israeli occupation of Palestine by calling on the international community to divest from Israel in order to pressure the nation to abide by international law and end its occupation profiteering • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrCA6wdHexI

  4. How Does This Relate to LMU? • Universities across the US have begun their own divestment campaigns especially within the University of California System • We’d like to begin a campaign at LMU, but as a private institution, the university is not obligated to share financial information • Our first step is to demand financial transparency not only for the sake of SJP but for issues regarding fair trade and other ethical investments • Solidarity with Loyola Chicago, Jesuits against occupation, alignment with mission statement • As tuition paying students should have the right to know where investments are

  5. University of California Divestment Efforts

  6. Rachel Corrie—US Peace Activist Interview with Rachel Corrie • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3JI-axaRF4 SuheirHammad • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m19D8dP2gA4 Reflection Question on the “service faith and the promotion of justice”

  7. Caterpillar Currently Operating at LMU

  8. Soft Approach to Financial Transparency First and Build Up • This week we are going to make an appointment with President Burcham regarding LMU financial politics • If information is denied to us, we will take further action: Loyolan piece, petition, weekly tabling (volunteers), reaching out to Jesuit allies • If information is given AND LMU in fact invests in companies complicit in the occupation we will have a public forum and work with ASLMU to come to a resolution with administration

  9. Legacy of Student Activism • UC Berkeley 1960s • 8:00 mins • LMU Student Activism 1989 • http://0-search.proquest.com.linus.lmu.edu/docview/280660702/14028DE696F615C3AB4/1?accountid=7418

  10. Martin Luther King Quote • “But though I was initially disappointed at being categorized as an extremist, as I continued to think about the matter I gradually gained a measure of satisfaction from the label. Was not Jesus an extremist for love…Was not Amos an extremist for justice…Was not Martin Luther an extremist…So the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be. Will we be extremists for hate or for love? Will we be extremists for the preservation of injustice or for the extension of justice?” - MLK In his Letter from Birmingham Jail

  11. For Next Time! • We need to form committees: • School Event Planning Committee • Will help organize and facilitate on campus events such as documentary screenings, solidarity events, lectures, etc. • Education and Outreach Committee • Will assist with tabling during convo hour, answering people’s questions, giving out literature, making announcements to other clubs • Social Events Committee • Responsible for building group camaraderie, planning fun events for members, etc.
