  1. International Internship in Materials (IIM)Program Goals -Provide a mechanism to develop global scientists and engineers -Enrich the learning experience of undergraduates by immersing them in an international research activity -Provide reciprocal opportunities for undergraduates from host institutions here at Penn State -Students will be able to use their experience towards technical electives and/or senior capstone -Provide departmental support so that students of any socioeconomic background can take advantage of this opportunity

What Makes IIM Unique? -Program is built upon existing relationships between Penn State faculty and the faculty of our host institutions which allows for a much more personal experience for our students-IIM students do not pay tuition while they are abroad(stay enrolled at their own institution – allows for them to pay insurance at their own institution) -Students are not required to attend classes but may do so if they like-More funding opportunities than traditional study abroad programs-Readily available full time assistance from staff coordinator at each location

Host Institutions -Darmstadt University of Technology, Darmstadt, Germany-Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Erlangen, Germany-University of Leeds, Leeds, England -National School of Industrial Ceramics, Limoges, France -University of Padua, Padua, Italy -The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England -Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland -University of the Basque Country, San Sebastian, Spain

Host Institution Responsibilities of Each Institution -Appoint coordinator for the program -Provide several research topics for students to choose from -Assist in visa application process -Arrange appropriate housing accommodations -Orientation upon arrival -Pay stipend of $500/month Home Institution -Appoint coordinator for the program -Provide academic background and recommendations of participant -Assign appropriate faculty research advisor from home institution -Arrange health insurance -Facilitate visa application

  5. Credits for IIM • Two new courses developed to give students credit • MatSE 484W (3): International Internship in Materials: Research Definition and Methodology • MatSE 485W (3): International Internship in Materials: Experimentation and Documentation)

  6. Funding Program is currently being funding by industrial gifts -We supported 7 undergraduates this academic year -Actively seeking other sources of funding for the future -In addition each institution pays the visiting student a stipend of $500/month during their stay

  10. Graduate International Internship in Materials -Same characteristics as IIM but primarily for graduate students -Based on Far East partners (Japan, Korea, and China) -End of May L. Chen and Messing to visit Chinese universities to establish (Tsinghua, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Shanghai Inst of Ceramics, and Shanghai JiaoTong) -Seoul National University, Nagoya University
