  2. A Unique Technological Context • The University of New Mexico was established in 1889, with humble beginnings • Since, however, it has developed alongside the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and has shared many of the same problems. • The two establishments have co-developed, creating a unique environment.

  3. Technologies in Specific • Engineering is a primary focus of the University of New Mexico. • The school’s professors have likely worked at the labs, giving them incredibly strong credentials and experience. • The engineering students who graduate from UNM are likely to work for the labs themselves, at some point.

  4. Problems Involving Research The new terms of federal funding, laid out by the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) makes it clear that research must have a clearly defined result in mind. Research itself does not provide the funding income that it once did. This becomes a problem for both the labs and UNM….

  5. Research and Funding • The labs have many predominantly theoretical research-oriented facilities, such as the particle accelerator.

  6. Former Accreditation Process Federal funding process takes place separately (Does not involve accreditation)

  7. Federal Funding Involving Accreditation Federal Advisory Committee Act regulates accreditation alongside funding, making educational institutions much more accountable for all ongoing projects and academic achievements. Accreditation not a financial influence- loses precedence with colleges

  8. The Main Problems • In order to remain ahead of the technological curve, UNM must implement budding educational technologies before other schools. • Remaining technologically advanced, and producing those who understand it, is a necessity for the labs.

  9. The Solution • Maintain each institution’s technological modernity with a cutting-edge system of teaching that applies to the world that is to come • A venture conjoining tablet technology and educational gaming – a revolutionary use of this technology that will prove without equal

  10. The Steps • Rebudget spending, moving away from desktop computers and toward tablets • Use time-tested, pre-existing educational games - target toward remedial level courses • Use innovative, recently released educational games – target toward upper division courses • Train all faculty and students in the use of tablets to avoid transitional issues.

  11. The Steps • Devote a new university department entirely to the research and development of new educational – label as a research-based group with a goal in mind, which accounts for its future funding • Create a new set of non-profit organizations, of varying uses, in order to provide an engine that sustains future finances.

  12. An Innovative Future Awaits!
