Commission Communication on KETs • The Economic Context • KETs = micro/nanoelectronics, nanotechnology, photonics, advanced materials, industrial biotechnology and advanced manufacturing technologies • A key source of innovation • Indispensable technology bricks for a wide range of product applications

Commission Communication on KETs • The diagnosis • Europe = still in the KETs race • Not capitalising on its own knowledge • Reasons: • No common definition and understanding of KETs • Insufficient focus on product demonstration and proof-of-concept projects • Access to sources of risk capital • Fragmentation of the EU internal market and regulatory differences • Shortage of skilled labour and entrepreneurs
