  1. Poster Session HRT1306 – Best Practice Health Service Cleaning 18th and 19th April 2013 Sydney Improving cleaning compliance.Presenter(s): Mandy Davidson Hospital Code Name:

  2. KEY PROBLEM - One Slide Unknown level of competence amongst the cleaners Unknown if they were using the products appropriately Ongoing transmission of organisms where there is a strong link between transmission and environmental contamination Failure to adequately clean frequently touched surfaces in a room on discharge of a patient with a known Multi Resistant Organism or Significant Organism

  3. AIM OF THIS INNOVATION – One Slide To improve the cleaning standards within the hospital and health service To ensure that the cleaning was to a standard that met the needs of the organisation Able to measure the the cleaning process and the level of competence of the staff

  4. BASELINE DATA - After the introduction of the latest Environemntal Cleaning procedure to Multi Resistant Organisms (MRO) or Significant Organsims (SO) the level of compliance with the cleaning of the frequently touched surfaces in a room was at 43%. We also had no idea of the number of staff who actually had the knowledge and skills to clean as per the new procedure.

  5. KEY CHANGES IMPLEMENTED Step by step pictorial guide of how to do a "high clean" Competency development Knowledge based on procedure Skill of the staff; technique; order; product Train the trainers Outcome use of DAZO audits - this provided a visual aid to assist in staff learning. The other part of the competency framework included a re audit process if staff had not met the required standard.

  6. OUTCOMES SO FAR Our current DAZO audit results sit a 95% March 2013. This from 11 random audits conducted. February results were at 78% for 14 random audits. This is probably a more valid result - however there is no doubt that there has been a raise in the standard of cleaning. Hotel Services have also trained 43% of staff in the last 6 months. We have an audit process for ensuring that staff complete the required clean to to the accepted minimum standard. This has been achieved in a climate of major change CARPs, realignment

  7. LESSONS LEARNT – One Slide Persistence and perservance. Don't make assumptions about what is another's knowledge, role, make sure that you are all on the same page and going in the same direction Need commitment from infection control, management and "hotel service" to move forward. You can't do this in isolation. Have an overarching committee that can move this forward we used our Envrionmental Management Committee which fed into the Infection Control Committee And you need to keep unmet actions on the agenda until they happen. I have always sought to understand why something has not worked. This questioning attitude has been beneficial. You need to find out the "reality" from the end users perspective!
