  1. Management of Research & Technology Synergies Within the EADS Aerospace Industry Eberhard Schulz-Lüpertz, ASTRIUM GmbH Lisbon, May 2003 ESA Workshop on Space Technology Management and Innovation

  2. Synergies of Space Technology with Other Industries The importance for the Space Community of developing technological synergies with other application areas is generally well recognised in Europe. Astrium, as business unit of the European Aeronautics, Defence & Space Company (EADS), takes advantage of technologies which can be developed commonly with other, mainly aeronautical industries. © Astrium

  3. EADS Technology Basis EADS was founded in 2000 by a merger of aerospace companies from several European countries. The group business comprises civil aircraft, helicopters, military aircraft, missiles, space systems (space infrastructure, launchers, and satellites), defence and civil systems. From the beginning, the group’s broad technological basis was recognized as one of the major assets of this multi-national company. Therefore a network has been established to generate synergies in the EADS Group by imparting knowledge and know-how, by sharing research laboratories and results, and by exchanging best practices. © Astrium

  4. The EADS Research & Technology Network • Two Pillars of the R&T Network: • Common Research & Technology Programme • Joint research projects with topics of transversal interest and relevance for the EADS group companies who share activities, budgets, and results. • Common projects are chosen by collective decisions. • Corporate Research Center • Research laboratories working transversally for all EADS companies in material sciences, electronics and software, optics and microwave technologies, operations research and other relevant fields. • CRC comprises labs in France, Germany, and Spain. © Astrium

  6. The EADS R&T NetworkOrganisation • The network activities are grouped in technology domains of common interest. • Each domain is organized by a corresponding Research & Technology Group (RTG) consisting of senior technology experts from the EADS companies and representatives of the related Corporate Research Lab. • The R&T Groups establish an annual research plan and control the common research projects which are carried out jointly. In addition they form an efficient and valuable technology information and intelligence network across EADS. • The network’s activities are supervised by a Technical Directors Committee and coordinated by a Steering Committee, both comprising members of EADS Corporate and Business Units. © Astrium

  13. Network Benefits • The EADS Research & Technology Network provides an opportunity to create technological synergies within a large group of European aerospace companies by • Sharing know-how, experience and methodologies • Pooling labs and think tanks • Balancing resources and sharing R&T results • Providing an innovative R&T environment • Learning from different applications and solutions. © Astrium

  14. Conclusions Astrium as a part of the EADS R&T network draws substantial benefit from transferring methodologies and know-how from other industries. Our customers do also benefit from this involvement by sharing technical excellence achieved on a broad basis of applications.
