  1. Mise en scene and Character Representationby Joanne Lloyd

  2. Props In terms of props we used common items which could be found easily and are useful. An example of this would be the back-packs. As are characters are survivors of an apocalyptic tragedy, they must be resourceful ( food, matches, blankets and water) to themselves in order to survive. In one scene we shoot in a landfill looking area. We see are characters moving objects to see if they can find anything beneficial for there survival. We have a match on action shot of Harry picking up a baseball bat and showing it to Louis. The prop of the bat is aggressive as it promotes a use of violence against the zombies. Also the addition of Harry having this prop is that he so shown to stronger over Louis. Establishing the roles of the characters subtly, and creating a sense of tension between characters and their surroundings.

  3. Costume and Make-up For costume of Harry and Louis we used regular clothes to indicated that not only are they are normal but the costume is all winter seasoned . This shows the harshness of the conditions they face in their journey. Harry has a gas mask to indicate that the disease is air born, however Louis knows more about the zombies and tells him that you can only get it through touch. In one other scene we have a zombie, this is mostly expressed through make-up as we put fake blood around the zombies mouth. Other techniques we did to make the zombie look feral was to mess up the clothing and hair. I feel that the costume could be improved on by using messy, muddy clothing with tears.

  4. Camera Movements and Proximity One shot we used we POV shots which were both close ups and mid-shot of Harry and Louis. In the placement of the camera I used a higher angle with Louis on screen and a low angle with Harry on screen. This shows a dominance and weakness between the characters in this situation. By doing this the character roles are clearly established. With proximity Louis is held against a tree by Harry, this was a two shot and shows both character expression. Louis appears to be scared and stunned by his face expression and stance. Harry in this scene is wearing his gas mask, giving a cold appearance and is intimidating as the audience cant relate with the characters emotions.

  5. Characterization We wanted to represent Harry as the stronger character, this is typical of the post apocalyptic genre as the main characters have a dynamic of protector and problem solver, or aggressive and cautious. This characterization is prominent in mainstream films. Harry is show to be strong as he is assertive, capable and adaptive nature by his reaction to possible danger e.g. Louis. However Harry is not reckless as he knows that the infected can not be killed easily so in one shot we film he is shown running away. Louis is most shown to be scared but is able to help himself as he stands to Harry and tells him about what happened to the world. He is knowledgeable about the situation and is able to help Harry. All shots we have use a variety of angels to show this dominant and recessive behaviour.
