  2. Jane Lamothe Jane.Lamothe@usask.ca 966-6049 Head, Natural Sciences Library If you have questions, feel free to e-mail, phone or drop by the reference desk or my office

  3. U of S Library home page http://library.usask.ca • Library catalogue • Course Reserve material • Electronic resources (indexes and full-text) • Library information (hours, services, etc.) • And much more!

  4. Natural Sciences Library http://library.usask.ca/nsl • Home for the Geology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science library collections • 2 study rooms (each seats 6 people) • Wireless, as well as network plug-ins • 10 Learning Commons computers

  5. NSL facts • During the summer 2004, we moved every book in NSL – approx. 180,000 vols.! • Most FAQ (46% of all questions recorded) in NSL last year – how to find reserves. • 64% of all questions asked at NSL last year involved use of the catalogue. • Biology library material is on the 3rd floor.

  6. Library Catalogue • http://library.usask.ca select “Our Catalogue” -changes to the catalogue this year

  7. Library Catalogue tips • Try a “word” search first • Narrow your search by selecting “Modify Search” • It is possible to save/e-mail your results by clicking “Save” (beside the book titles) and then clicking on “View Saved” – follow instructions • http://sundog.usask.ca (library catalogue)

  8. More than just a library catalogue… • http://sundog.usask.ca • Can check your library account (make sure your address is correct!) and see what you have signed out, any fines, renew books, etc. • Course Reserve lists can be checked here – you need to find a call number in order to get something from the reserve collection!

  9. Finding Journal Articles • Use “Journal Articles” and “Databases (A – Z)” http://library.usask.ca • Some (not all) indexes will link you to the full-text journal article • Some indexes call for the “two step process” – check the index, then check the Library Catalogue

  10. Useful indexes and databases for Mycology See Biology resources at http://library.usask.ca/subjects.php?subject=biol • Biological Abstracts (1990 – current) • Web of Science (1955 – current) • CISTI Source (1993 – current) • Microbiology collection (mycology) 1982-current

  11. More on Biological Abs… • Use Index or Thesaurus first • Search concepts individually and then combine to narrow

  12. So where’s the journal article? • Indexes lead you to citations (journal article identifying information - title of article, journal name, authors, volume, issue, pages) and abstracts (brief summary of journal articles). • Click on the yellow link to see if full-text is available or if we have the Journal in print. If not, can ILL for the article.

  13. Other Journal resources • Try “Electronic Journals” http://library.usask.ca/ejournals This listing has changed since last year. It works best if you know the Journal Title or words in the journal title.

  14. Web Resources? http://mycology.cornell.edu/ http://www.mycology.net/ www.mykoweb.com/ Try using - www.google.caworld’s largest search engine www.scirus.comscience-specific search engine

  15. Caution! Evaluate information before you use it! • How reliable is the information on the web? Is it: - Accurate? (can you verify the information?) - Authoritative? (who wrote it?) - Objective? (balanced, unbiased discussion?) - Current? (when was the page updated?)

  16. Need help with writing, citing material? • See: http://library.usask.ca/ref/howto/ for a list of helpful sites on how to find, evaluate, write and cite! • http://writing.colostate.edu/references/sources/cbe/index.cfm Council of Biology Editors (CBE) Scientific Style

  17. We are here to help! Any questions, please ask!
