Required Elements for the Project • View the following video from Youtube • The Giver - trailer • Survey • 10 questions pre-approved by me • Histogram showing survey results with percentages of each type of answer calculated. The histogram must have/be: • Labels and titles • Colorful • Accurate • Group conclusions supported with data • Conclusion with explanation that includes data • Incorporated clearly into presentation • Final Presentation • Chosen from the list on the “create your presentation” slide • Final Reflection

  8. Empathy • The ability to identify with and understand another person’s feelings. “We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.”― Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  9. Timeline • Survey - • You will have one week to design your questions, make the survey and gather data. Keep the key values from the previous slides in mind as you develop your questions. Make sure there is a way to get meaningful data from your questions. You will be provided with class time in the computer room. Please take the survey yourself. Each of you will be required to compare your results to those of the group as a whole. • Histogram • This will need to be done immediately after the survey data is gathered. • Group and Individual Conclusions • You will have two days to discuss the data, concentrating on answering questions like the ones posed in the “create your presentation” slide and write your group conclusion using supporting data. • Write an explanation of how your results compared to the team’s results. Have their opinions changed yours? If so, how and why? If not, why not? • Presentation • You will have 2 weeks to put your presentation together. There will be 4 class days right before the due date to work together on the final touches and get my input before you present your work to the class.

  10. Create a Survey • Usesurveymonkey.comto create a survey with a minimum of 10 questions that you will use to collect data and make a histogram from. Your group will be using your data to draw conclusions about moral values as part of a final presentation. All groups will be required to fill out all surveys. • Click on the link below to see a sample survey with just a few questions. You should make sure that the majority of your questions are in the “agree-disagree” format so that you will have numbers to work with. • The Giver survey questionnaire (example)

  11. Create your Presentation • Your presentation must include a histogram, an analysis of the answers by percent and a description of your conclusions. These should answer questions like: • Is it the responsibility of a society to protect its citizens from pain? • If you believe, as Jonas does, that everyone needs to experience both joy and suffering to grow, must you take actions that will have serious consequences for yourself and the community? • Why do you think the community was willing to give up so much so that they wouldn’t feel pain? Is this a responsible action? • You may present your data and conclusions in a variety of ways: • A PowerPoint presentation • A movie (between 3-8 minutes) • A skit • A traditional presentation with backboard and graphics • Any other method that is approved by me

  12. Final Reflection • Write a reflection in which you discuss the following: • Has working on this presentation and discussing the character values in it made you think about yourself and your actions in a different way? Why or why not? • Pick one of the character values listed at the beginning of the PowerPoint that you believe you possess. Give an example from your life that shows that value in action.
