  1. Self-Awareness and Other People

  2. Self-Awareness--FIRO-B • Different from cognitive style, attitude toward change, values: relates to behavior and relations with other people • Management and leadership over-whelmingly interpersonal. • Very important component: tendencies to behave in certain ways regardless of others involved or situation.

  3. Three interpersonal needs • Need for inclusion-to be included and to include others • Need for control-satisfactory balance of power and influence in relationships (control over people while remaining independent yourself) • Need for affection-closeness vs. smothering. Warmth, intimacy.

  4. Expressing toward others vs. wanted from others Inclusion Control Affection Expressed Toward Others (e) I join other people and I include others I take charge and I influence people I get close and personal with people Wanted From Others (w) I want other people to include me I want others to lead me or give me directions I want people to get close and personal with me

  5. Avg. FIRO-B scores and ranges InclusionControlAffection Row Expressed Toward Others (e) 2 to 5 3.9 3 to 6 4.1 9 to 18 13.4 4 to 7 5.4 Wanted From Others (w) 5 to 8 6.5 3 to 6 4.6 3 to 6 4.6 11 to 20 15.9 _____________________________________ 5 to 11 8.5 6 to 12 8.9 20 to 38 29.3 Column Totals 9 to 15 11.9

  6. Interpretation/ Analysis • Compare “expressed” total with “wanted” to determine willingness to give and to receive: controllers have high e and low w. Reverse patterns (high w and low e) is called passive pattern. • Comparing each “need” score tells which one is your most important interpersonal need. • Compare them to national norms

  7. FIRO-B (continued) • Social interaction index (bottom right total number): highest possible is 54 • People with high scores have need to interact: more likely to be gregarious, outgoing. Low scores more typical of shy guys.

  8. Interpersonal compatibility • Greatest usefulness: matching scores with those of others • Reciprocal incompatibility common way: + Manager’s e - Sub.’s w Subordinate’s e - Mgr.’s w
