  1. Cons of Tidal Energy Tiffany Giannotti 8-L

  2. About the Tidal Energy • Tidal energy is a renewable resource of energy produced by harnessing the kinetic energy of ocean currents and tides • Today, tidal energy is harnessed by building a huge dam across the river estuary • Tidal energy is used from the gravitational forces between the moon, sun, and the earth • Types • Tidal Barrages • Tidal Fences • Tidal Turbines

  3. Table of contents Economic Concerns Environmental Concerns Map Availability

  4. Environmental Concerns… • Tidal Power Plants that use dam estuaries can block sea life migration • Silt build up can impact local ecosystems • Tidal fences can disturb sea life migration • Can disrupt movement of large marine animals • A tidal station can harm plants and animals in the estuary • Tidal barrages can change the tidal level in the basin • Tidal barrages can increase turbidity • Tidal barrages can affect navigation and recreation

  5. Economic concerns… • Construction costs a lot and has highly lengthened payback periods • Cost per kilowatt-hour of tidal energy isn't competitive with conventional fossil fuel power • Tidal turbines (compared to wind turbines) are much heavier and more expensive to build

  6. Availability… • Need large increasing tidal waves • At least 16ft between low and high tide • Only 40 power plants on the Earth • No power plants in the U.S. • Around 100 places where tidal energy could be used

  7. Map… Places on earth where tidal energy could be harnessed
