Expectations in 5th grade • Student • Completing assignments • Maintaining an organized desk/backpack • Reading 100 minutes per week at home • Teacher • Academic instruction • Providing a low-threat, high-challenge environment • Meeting the individual needs of all students • Parent • Monitor your child and provide support when needed • Encourage your child to do his/her best • Praise your child for his/her effort

  3. 5th Grade Goals • Positive Attitude • Confidence • Independence • Self-motivation

  4. Organization Strategies at Home • Have them show you their assignment notebook • Set a designated study time and place • Weekly book bag clean up • Prepare for the day ahead the night before • Put your child in the driver’s seat • Praise your child’s effort and independence

  5. Homework Policy • Practice and effort is the goal • 1 day late accepted if rare occurrence • Student may request to work during recess • Frustration Clause • If a student works on an assignment for 30 minutes and can’t complete it, write a short note right on the homework. I will provide extra support in class to any student(s) who have difficulty

  6. 5th Grade Curriculum • Math-Common Core • Everyday Math (SMJ, SRB, math notebooks) • Mastery of basic facts (+ - / x) • Literacy • Scott Foresman Reading Program • 6 Traits of Writing • Science • Ecology, Human Body, Energy (electricity) • Social Studies • History of America from Early Americans through Am. Revolution

  7. School-wide Testing • Reading- baseline, end-of-year • Fluency checks- Fall, Winter and Spring • NECAP- 1 week (starts in October) • NWEA- math and reading (Fall and Spring) • Writing prompts- Fall and Spring • Math- baseline, end-of-year, basic facts

  8. Ways You Can Help • Parties * • Join the PTO • Chaperone a field trip- Sturbridge Village • Visit/help our classroom • Wish List- germ X, kleenex, paper towels, deck of cards, D batteries, Masking tape
