Regional project on the use of gender indicators for public policy-making (2000 to present) (UNFPA, UNIFEM, …). • Design and implementation of an integrated, comparative system of gender indicators and statistics (32 country profiles). Processing of household surveys for 18 countries (1994-1999-2002 and 2004/2005). • Annual updates and dissemination via ECLAC publications, its Web portal [ www.eclac.cl/mujer ] and CEPALSTAT • Inter-agency coordination, preparation and distribution of a technical assistance manual on the production and use of gender indicators.

Objectives of the system of indicators • To produce the information needed to increase the visibility of women’s situation and the inequality existing between men and women • To disseminate comparable information • To promote the use of new indicators (poverty, violence, labour) • To strengthen new information sources (time-use surveys) • To provide technical inputs for policy decisions • To contribute to user-producer links • To fulfil mandates on the production and dissemination of gender statistics: • Regional Programme of Action for the Women of Latin America and the Caribbean (Mar del Plata, 1994) • Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, 1995)

Censuses as an information source • Areas covered: Education, fertility, mortality, employment, health and environmental conditions…. • Indicators and tabulations for a more in-depth exploration: internal and international migration, membership in racial and ethnic groups, lifecycle (girls and young women, older adults), activity • ECLAC activities: Caribbean: 1990(11 countries)and 2000(6 countries) census round Latin America: 2000 (6 countries) census round

  7. Millennium Development Objectives • 11 country studies (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Paraguay, Venezuela (BR) and Uruguay) (2004-2007) • Regional overview of the Millennium challenges in the sphere of gender equality (2007) • A 2006 report on the Millennium Development Goals that looks at equality beween the sexes and the autonomy of women in Latin America and the Caribbean • Project on strengthening the capacity of Latin American and Caribbean countries to fulfil the MDGs • Project on interregional cooperation to strenghten social inclusion, gender equality and healthpromotion within the MDG framework
